EL TEN ELEVEN RECORD STORE DAY IN-STORE AT THE RECORD EXCHANGE!

El Ten Eleven (elteneleven.com) will perform live at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St. in Downtown Boise) on Record Store Day (recordstoreday.com) at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16. As always, this Record Exchange in-store performance is free and all ages. El Ten Eleven also will perform at Neurolux (neurolux.com) later that evening (8 p.m.); advance tickets ($8) are available at The Record Exchange.

Keeping in line with their incessant touring regimen, Los Angeles-based instrumental duo El Ten Eleven (elteneleven.com) are on their second tour of the year and it’s only April. The pair, comprised of Kristian Dunn on double neck bass/guitar and fretless bass and drummer Tim Fogarty, will showcase their jaw-dropping musical acrobatics in Boise at The Record Exchange and Neurolux on Record Store Day.

Although their fourth album may cheekily be called It’s Still Like A Secret (released Nov. 9, 2010 on the band’s own Fake Record Label imprint), El Ten Eleven’s brand of pulsating instrumental rock is far from a secret. For the past eight years, the duo has been exciting listeners with a collection of albums filled with densely textured rhythms, rumbling bass and an ingenious use of guitars and looping pedals, steadily amassing a following by playing more than 400 shows. All of this has caused Relix to feature the band as one of “5 Artists You Should Know About” in their “On The Verge” section in the April/May 2011 issue.

Likened to “watching two superheroes do their thing” by SF Weekly, El Ten Eleven’s live show is truly a technical marvel to witness as the duo recreate their pounding landscapes without the help of a single computer or sequencer. Instead, Dunn wields a double-neck bass/guitar and a fretless bass and records and loops himself live while his feet dance on an extensive floorboard of pedals. His partner in crime, Fogarty, wreaks havoc on his drum kit and electronic drum pads while also occasionally looping himself. “As each layer upon layer is set, El Ten Eleven’s songs coalesce into head nodding, cog-spinning music machines,” LA Weekly exclaimed about the musicians’ method.

Like their instrumental contemporaries such as Explosions in the Sky, El Ten Eleven’s music is highly sought after and has been heavily used in the realms of television, film and advertising. Of significant note are two highly acclaimed PBS documentaries — Helvetica and Objectified — both of which were nominated for Independent Spirit Awards. These films, directed and produced by Gary Hustwit, were scored by Dunn and prominently feature El Ten Eleven’s music. The highly anticipated next installment, Urbanized, will be released this year and once again feature music by El Ten Eleven and Dunn, including several pieces composed exclusively for the film.

Praise for El Ten Eleven and It’s Still Like A Secret:

“They drive somewhere between a roughed-up version of Sigur Rós and Ratatat you wouldn’t dare bring home to your parents.” — Filter

“The act is a wonder to behold live, but on the group’s fourth album, the layered sound is just as hypnotic.” — Los Angeles Magazine

“Bassist-guitarist Kristian Dunn and drummer Tim Fogarty indulge in plenty of effects and loops to fill out their sound with glittering layers, but always keep the instrumentals focused on bright pulses and punchy hooks.” — The Onion

“What El Ten Eleven does — as just two people — is a thing of beauty and something that usually takes the hands of many more.” — Daytrotter.com

“No duo anywhere is melded tighter than these two.” — The Stranger

FOSTER THE PEOPLE EP ONLY 99 CENTS!

Buzz band Foster the People (fosterthepeople.com) just rolled through town to play the Reef, of all places, as they make the regional rounds before heading to Coachella next month to get the SoCal hipster turds all hot and bothered with their peppy indie-pop.

If you like stuff, particularly MGMT, Peter Bjorn and John, and Phoenix, you should check out Foster the People’s self-titled, three-track EP, which The Record Exchange is currently selling for the amazingly low price of 99 cents.

Let’s look at that nice price in comparison to some other popular purveyors of music goods:

iTunes: $3.87
Amazon: $3.49
The Record Exchange: 99 cents

Here’s what Guardian said recently about Foster the People:

Their song “Pumped Up Kicks” … is already being talked about as one of the sure-fire surprise hits of the summer. It’s one of those lo-fi indie tracks that, like Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Kids,” has “alternative anthem” written all over it. Its crossover potential is confirmed by the simple, shuffling beat, the buoyant Brian Wilson bassline, and the outrageously catchy melody. The tune is sung through some muffling device that merely serves to make you strain even harder to hear the words, and after a verse or two the melody is bolstered by some whistling. And if that wasn’t enough to ingratiate itself into the heads and hearts of festivalgoers this summer. It’s MGMT’s “Kids” meets “Young Kids,” with a hint of Empire of the Sun’s “We Are the People.” Quite clearly, Foster the People are into people power, and they’re doing it for the kids.

THE LONELY FOREST RX IN-STORE APRIL 10 (4 PM) – BAND’S ONLY SHOW IN TOWN!

The Lonely Forest will perform live at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St., Downtown Boise) at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10 (the band’s only show in town). As always, this Record Exchange in-store performance is free and all ages.

LISTEN TO THE LONELY FOREST’S NEW CHRIS WALLA-PRODUCED ALBUM ARROWS IN ITS ENTIRETY HERE.

Set between ancient forest and the forest-green waters of Puget Sound at the very edge of the continental United States, Anacortes, Washington (population 17,000) sees a lot come and go. Ferries docked here deliver thousands of itinerant hippies, millionaires and sightseers to farms and mansions dotting the remote San Juan Islands while Navy bombers and helicopters based nearby perform ear-splitting flyovers. Through all the coming and going, the local DIY community remains remarkably consistent and strong; an expression of defiant, end-of-the-line creativity. From that community comes The Lonely Forest (myspace.com/thelonelyforest), a rock band of four Anacortes natives with no intention of leaving.

From the outset, The Lonely Forest — singer/guitarist/keyboardist John Van Deusen, guitarist Tony Ruland, drummer Braydn Krueger and bassist Eric Sturgeon— has been about inclusion. In 2005, a raucous garage session inspired the guys (Braydn, Tony and Eric) to join forces with Van Deusen’s piano-pop. The newly formed entity, now called The Lonely Forest, played their first show while two band members were still in high school (the other two having recently graduated). Since that show, The Lonely Forest have racked up miles; steadily becoming heroes of the Northwest all-ages scene through relentless gigging around the region. From their first show at the Department of Safety, center of Anacortes’ all-ages DIY scene, to their high-profile appearance at Bumbershoot 2009, a sold-out concert at the Showbox in Seattle last fall and a coveted spot on 2010’s Sasquatch Festival, the accolades for The Lonely Forest have grown along with their fanbase.

As grows their fanbase, The Lonely Forest ‘s music is continually expanding and evolving. At its core, the music features Van Deusen’s soaring vocals and keyboard melodies wrapped tightly around Ruland’s expansive guitar, anchored by a heavy yet nimble rhythm section. The contrast of brilliant pop songs featuring lyrics about spiritual longing wedded to an almost prog-rock sensibility appeals to broad swath of listeners, from wide-eyed teenagers to jaded scenesters. As always, inclusion is important to these guys.

The Lonely Forest will continue their steady climb to prominence from modest Northwest roots with the March 22 release of their new album, Arrows, for Chris Walla’s label imprint, Trans Records. Walla, guitarist and producer for Grammy-nominated rock band Death Cab for Cutie, made The Lonely Forest his first signing when he launched Trans with the support of Death Cab for Cutie’s major label home, Atlantic Records. In addition to his role as label head, Walla produced and mixed Arrows at Sound City studio in Los Angeles, Tiny Telephone in San Francisco and his own Portland-based studio, Alberta Court. He also mixed three tracks: “Be Everything,” “Turn Off This Song” and “Live There.” The rest of the album was mixed by John Goodmanson (Girls, Nada Surf, Owl City).
