RECORD STORE DAY EXCLUSIVE RELEASES AND EVENTS APRIL 21-24

“Indie record stores were the only music teachers I ever had. The world would be a dark and lonely place without them.” – Neko Case

It’s been a long time since we’ve rock and rolled … at least Record Store Day style.

On Saturday, April 23 (8am-8pm), The Record Exchange will celebrate the first single-day global Record Store Day since 2019. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Record Store Day and the return of the traditional RSD April event, and per Record Exchange tradition, we’re turning it into a weekend-long celebration.

RECORD EXCHANGE RECORD STORE DAY HIGHLIGHTS:

– The Record Exchange will have 275 exclusive Record Store Day releases available on Saturday, April 23. Titles include vinyl releases from Taylor Swift, Childish Gambino, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Grateful Dead, Kacey Musgraves, Rex Orange County, David Bowie, Alice in Chains, the Doors and many more – full list below, or visit recordstoreday.com for complete details on each title, cover images and a printable PDF. The Record Exchange Gift Shop will open at 7:30am on April 23 to let the first part of the line inside the store (you may line up outside as early as you wish). Exclusives will be available beginning at 8am. The first 25 people in line will receive vouchers for a free gift bag with purchase; a $50 gift card will be randomly inserted into one of the 25 bags. Free drip coffee will be available from 7:30 to 8am.

– Curtis Stigers will perform an after-hours in-store set at 8pm Sunday, April 24. The performance is a record release celebration for Stigers’ new album This Life. Admission wristbands are available with purchase of This Life on vinyl and CD. Full details here.

– Distant Family will kick off Record Store Day weekend with an album release in-store performance at 6pm Thursday, April 21. The band, which is opening for Built to Spill on a string of Midwestern tour dates in May, is celebrating the release of its second album Penumbra. Full details here.

– Boise musicians will busk on the sidewalk outside the store from 11am to 5pm April 23.

– A limited-edition Record Store Day T-shirt designed by Boise artist John Warfel will be available for purchase on April 23.

Woodland Empire Ale Craft will offer $1 off pints with a Record Exchange Record Store Day receipt on Saturday, April 23. Woodland Empire will be open 2-10pm on April 23.

NOTE ON THE TAYLOR SWIFT RSD EXCLUSIVE: If you’re planning on visiting The Record Exchange on Saturday for the extremely limited Taylor Swift exclusive, the release will not be out on the floor with the other titles. Customers will be able to enter a drawing between 8am and 8pm on Saturday (in person only) for a chance to purchase it. Full details here.

HERE’S HOW WE’RE HANDLING THE TAYLOR SWIFT RSD EXCLUSIVE

First, the bad news: The Record Exchange is getting an extremely low number of Taylor Swift Record Store Day exclusive 7-inches. As in, single digits. There are 1,400 stores in the United States participating in Record Store Day, and the orders far exceeded demand. Thus, every store in the country is only receiving a few copies of the release.

The good news: You don’t have to get up and stand in line at 2am for a chance to purchase one.

While most RSD exclusives are typically first-come-first-served, the Taylor exclusive is a rare situation, and a rare exception for The Record Exchange. Instead of putting it out with the other exclusives for Saturday morning, we’re holding a drawing for a chance to purchase one of the 7-inches.

Here’s how it works: You must visit The Record Exchange in person on Record Store Day Saturday, April 23 to fill out an entry form for a chance to purchase the Taylor vinyl. We will be open 8am-8pm on Record Store Day. It is free to enter, but if your name is drawn, you must purchase the item (i.e. we’re not giving it to you). The entry forms will be behind the counter. In order to get one, you must visit the counter on Record Store Day and ask a clerk for one. The entry forms are one per person and must be filled out in full at the counter. Incomplete and duplicate entry forms will be discarded. Entry forms will not be available before or after Record Store Day, only on Saturday, April 23. You will not be able to enter the drawing over the phone or online; in person only.

After closing on Saturday, we will draw names at random, then notify the winners on the morning of Sunday, April 24. If you are one of the winners, you must be able to visit The Record Exchange in person on April 24 and purchase the vinyl. We will be open 10am-7pm on Sunday. If you win, we will not sell the piece to you online or over the phone; in-person only. If you are unable to come back on Sunday and make the purchase, we will draw another name in your place.

Thank you for your understanding with this unprecedented situation. If you have any questions, please contact us here.

DISTANT FAMILY ‘PENUMBRA’ ALBUM RELEASE PARTY / RECORD STORE DAY WEEKEND KICKOFF THURSDAY, APRIL 21!

Distant Family will kick off Record Store Day weekend with an album release in-store performance at 6pm Thursday, April 21. The band, which is opening for Built to Spill on a string of Midwestern tour dates in May, is celebrating the release of its second album Penumbra.

ABOUT DISTANT FAMILY AND ‘PENUMBRA’

Stemming from Boise, Idaho, Distant Family are cosmic jelly all the way in and all the way out. Composed of bone, blood, dirt and love that stretches from the shores of Japan to the dusty desert hills, they fuse different backgrounds into a cohesive blend of Japanese American psych surf indie art damage. They’re following up their 2019 debut LP Canopy with a new LP Penumbra, which delves even deeper into their uniquely crafted sound.
