ROCK TO READ RETURNS OCTOBER 21!

Go Listen Boise and Rediscovered Bookshop are proud to announce the return of Rock to Read, a fundraising evening of music and spoken word, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Linen Building, 1402 W. Grove St. in Downtown Boise’s Linen District. Admission is $10 adults, $5 12 and younger or $20 per family. All ages, non-alcoholic beverages, Pie Hole pizza. Plenty of free, off-street parking is available at the Linen Building.

The musical and literary communities of Boise will once again join forces to raise funds for the Boise Public School District libraries. Last year’s Rock to Read (facebook.com/RockToRead.Boise) raised enough money to buy each school in the district a set of brand new, award-winning books. Yeah, you read that right — each school in the Boise Public School District, elementary, high and charter schools. (This year, once again, the state of Idaho made drastic cuts to school funding. Supplies, field trips, administrative personnel and libraries have all suffered.)

This year, we aim to repeat our success. This means raising enough money to provide approximately 50 schools with a set of books chosen from the winners of the Children’s Literature Awards (ala.org). It basically works out to around $60 per school. Achievable. (We proved it, and boy did we have fun in the process!)

Tim Johnstone of 94.9 FM The River Morning Show will once again serve as Master of Ceremonies. Local art and goodies from local businesses will feature in the silent auction, pizza from Pie Hole will be available and a children’s writing contest organized by Rediscovered Bookshop will be just a few things you can look forward to, as well as the main attraction — live music and spoken word provided by Boise’s most creative and innovative (and some of the youngest!) performers:

ABOUT CALEXICO

Calexico (casadecalexico.com) is a diverse collective based around the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino. The Tucson, Ariz., based band has been cited as a melting pot for country, indie rock, various Spanish-rooted sub-genres, jazz, and many other musical styles. Calexico has released six full-length albums, six original material tour albums, five EPs (one a collaboration with Iron & Wine) and a live DVD. Additionally, they have performed and recorded with notable musicians such as Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Amos Lee, Nancy Sinatra, Glen Hansard, and many more.

There’s always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Ever since they were a largely instrumental duo experimenting with their unique collection of instruments and soundtrack sensibilities, Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish-speaking neighbor Mexico, equal parts Sergio Leone, Larry McMurtry, Carlos Fuentes and Cormac McCarthy. Naming themselves after a town near the California/Mexico border in honor of this cultural mélange, they’ve spent the eighteen years since they met in Los Angeles mapping out musical territory that had otherwise been neglected or at the very least considered the preserve of historians.

Calexico’s most recent full-length, Carried To Dust, received the following critical praise:

Music of emotional power and beauty…it richly rewards repeat listening. (Pitchfork.com, 8.3 rating)

Calexico arrives as multiple bands on its new album… At its best, it’s all of them at once, eerie and poetic as it straddles more than one border. (The New York Times)

Carried To Dust‘s songs travel a trail that seems carved out of ancient echoes. (Spin Magazine)

A beauty from start to finish. (Paste Magazine)

ANTSY MCCLAIN AND THE TRAILER PARK TROUBADOURS RETURN TO BOISE FOR BENEFIT CONCERT AT EGYPTIAN 6.24!

Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours will roll into Boise on Friday, June 24, for their third benefit concert for the Boise chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St., Boise. Tickets ($25) are available in advance at The Record Exchange.

OK, some band called the Trailer Park Troubadours might conjure up images of a redneck novelty act. Nothing could be further from the truth. Antsy and the Troubs dish up clever ballads and anthems dedicated to the values of America’s simplest aspirations. They speak up for the average, have-to-go-to-work-everyday American, regardless of race, religion or politics.

The Troubadours are the creation of the multitalented Antsy McClain. He’s a singer, songwriter, award-winning graphic artist, author and humorist. He sticks to his roots: the son of a truck driver dad and Avon-selling mom who grew up in a trailer park.

Sharing his mantra of “Enjoy The Ride,” McClain has won friendship and collaboration with some of the most talented musicians in the world. With such a wide circle of mentors like Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel and cowboy poet Baxter Black, it’s no wonder McClain marches to the beat of a different drum. And his influences don’t stop there. His live shows touch upon country, rockabilly, jazz, swing, and a number of pop culture references. He’s a favorite of Americana radio stations such as KPIG of Santa Cruz, Calif., and WDVX of Clinton, Tenn.

McClain’s poetry, heartfelt ballads and humorous tales have garnered praise from such artists as Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Lindsay Buckingham and David Wilcox, to name a few.

Teddy Thompson (teddythompson.com) is a native Englishman who has adopted New York City as his home; famously the son of singer-songwriters Richard and Linda Thompson, he emigrated to the states more than a decade ago, barely out of his teens, to embark on a career of his own.

Thompson began working on the material for Bella, his fourth album for Verve Forecast (Feb. 8, 2011), after he returned from his last tour. Recorded in New York City and produced by David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, The Strokes), Bella combines lean rock and roll with lush string arrangements on material that is both disarmingly catchy and often startlingly frank.

Since 2008’s A Piece Of What You Need, which London’s The Guardian called “one of the year’s best,” this has become something of a Thompson trademark, teasing the listener with immediately addictive melodies then pulling the rug out from under them with unsparingly confessional or darkly amusing lyrics.

Thompson agrees: “I felt, as I’ve developed some kind of style, that what I had to offer, that what came naturally, was my sense of humor, my sensibility. It’s very English, very sarcastic, self-deprecating. In one way, that’s just how my songs come out; in another way, that’s my favorite style: a pretty melody with a twist.”

Praise for Teddy Thompson and Bella:

“He’s a craftsman who echoes the folk rock of his parents and the melancholy pop of Crowded House. On Bella, he channels Roy Orbison heartbreak, Lou Christie falsetto, and Righteous Brothers drama with stirring results.” — Entertainment Weekly

Bella is a flat-out stunner, the work of a completely original songwriter and performer, and one of the young year’s most startlingly eclectic and thoroughly fascinating albums.” — American Songwriter

“Thompson’s fifth album is a winningly charming affair, showcasing his rich voice.” — BBC Music

Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Thomas Paul (thomaspaulmusic.com) is adept at a wide variety of musical styles ranging from rock to country to jazz to funk. An in-demand session player, instructor and engaging solo artist, Paul recently released his “intriguing” (Idaho Statesman) second album, Goodbye, Waterloo.
