VINTAGE TURNTABLE SPOTLIGHT: LINEAR-TRACKING SONY PS-LX500

This week’s Vintage Turntable Spotlight features the Sony PS-LX500 linear-tracking turntable.

The PS-LX500 is a fully-automatic, direct-drive turntable (both plusses), but the big deal about this deck is the linear tracking system. Compared to a standard pivoted arm, a linear tracking arm has a very small tracking error (with greatly reduced harmonic distortion) and almost no pressure on the inside wall of the groove, which means improved tracking ability and channel separation.

The arm transport buttons allow you to move the tonearm easily over the desired point of the record with the dust cover closed. The start/stop and tonearm up/down functions can also be controlled using the buttons on the front panel. This sharp-looking turntable is $259.00 and a stellar deal at the price considering how few linear-tracking decks we see.

For the first time since Happy Hollow, Vitriola reunites Tim Kasher, guitarist/singer Ted Stevens and bassist Matt Maginn with founding drummer Clint Schnase, as well as co-producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, M.
