VINTAGE TURNTABLE SPOTLIGHT: LINEAR-TRACKING TECHNICS

This week’s Vinyl Tuesday Vintage Turntable Spotlight features a snazzy early-80s Technics SL-DL1.

The Technics SL-DL1 is a fully automatic turntable with a direct-drive motor. The unique thing about this turntable is the linear-tracking tonearm, which is actually housed in the dust cover and fitted with a high-performance moving-magnet cartridge. Other features include auto record size selection, 2-speed forward and reverse search function, and auto cueing with muting and repeat facility.

In short, this turntable has an elegant electronic design complemented by a sleek visual aesthetic. Popular all over the world upon its release, the Technics SL-DL1 remains a durable, reliable turntable and a bargain at $249.

VINTAGE TURNTABLE SPOTLIGHT: LINEAR-TRACKING SONY PS-LX500

This week’s Vintage Turntable Spotlight features the Sony PS-LX500 linear-tracking turntable.

The PS-LX500 is a fully-automatic, direct-drive turntable (both plusses), but the big deal about this deck is the linear tracking system. Compared to a standard pivoted arm, a linear tracking arm has a very small tracking error (with greatly reduced harmonic distortion) and almost no pressure on the inside wall of the groove, which means improved tracking ability and channel separation.

The arm transport buttons allow you to move the tonearm easily over the desired point of the record with the dust cover closed. The start/stop and tonearm up/down functions can also be controlled using the buttons on the front panel. This sharp-looking turntable is $259.00 and a stellar deal at the price considering how few linear-tracking decks we see.

VINTAGE TURNTABLE SPOTLIGHT: FRONT-LOADING SONY PS-FL1

Starting this week, we’re spotlighting a vintage turntable every Vinyl Tuesday, and we’re kicking it off with one of our current favorites.

This Sony PS-FL1 is a retro-futuristic beauty with a rare and insatiably cool feature: The fully-automatic turntable has a slide-in/slide-out powered drawer as opposed to the more common top-loading/dust cover type deck. Simply press the open button, load a record, press the close button and away you go.

In addition to looking awesome, the PS-FL1 offers another benefit: Being front-loading, you can stack the turntable under a receiver or other component to save space.

This particular model comes with a Shure M95ED cartridge and runs $249. It won’t last long.

Pro-ject’s Essential Phono USB turntable ($399.99) features a quiet-running synchronous motor with silicone belt driving a low-resonance platter made from MDF. The main chassis is made from lightweight, but very stiff particle board. Utilising a straight 8,6“ aluminium tonearm with a single-pivot bearing made from steel, a spectacular good tracking of vinyl grooves is guaranteed. Due to the brilliant concept, unwanted resonances are effectively transferred into the tonearmbase and turntable chassis. Armtube and headshell are made from a single piece of aluminium.

Because Essential Phono USB comes with pre-mounted cartridge and built-in phono preamplifier with USB output, connection to both line-level input of your hifi system and PC/Mac easily can be used simultaneously!
