It is that American success that has shaped Adele’s follow-up album. It’s steeped in Southern blues, country and soul. In another singer’s hands this might seem a nakedly ambitious attempt to appeal to the American charts, but Adele makes the material sound genuine, largely because it is perfect for her. Where previously her slight, observational songs seemed barely able to carry her powerful voice, the emotional and musical heft of these styles enables her to really spread her vocal wings.

And her voice is a thing of wonder. There is warmth, power and vulnerability, sometimes in the same note. She has less of the unpredictable edge of Amy Winehouse, or the am-dram cool of Florence Welch, but she has a far greater range and subtlety than either, and hers is a voice that seems to go right to your heart.

Producers Rick Rubin and Paul Epworth have done the right thing by foregrounding that and leaving the musical background solid and unshowy. Whether she can sell American country sounds to a British audience remains to be seen, but avoiding the dancefloor pyrotechnics that so many singers are drawn to at the moment is a wise move — on this album she out-divas them all. – TT

VINYL WORD: NIRVANA’S INCESTICIDE. PLUS ADELE, G. LOVE AND MORE!

BUY VINYL HERE

More than just a b-sides collection, INCESTICIDE culls together Nirvana’s work before and around their now-legendary albums. Released between the groundbreaking NEVERMIND and the artsier IN UTERO, the rarities and outtakes which make up this album shed new light on Nirvana’s oeuvre, filling in the gaps between official releases and providing fans with a wider variety of recordings from different sources.

Highlights include three covers, taken from John Peel sessions: a Devo tune (“Turnaround”) and two songs by Scotland’s The Vaselines, whose purposefully vapid pop magic is given the force of a juggernaut, with the minimal production that best showcases the Nirvana’s aggressive grace. The famous quasi-live recording conditions of the BBC sessions provide another standout, the surging, desperate “Aneurysm,” which remains one of Nirvana’s finest recorded moments. –CDU

VINYL WORD: MOGWAI’S HARDCORE WILL NEVER DIE BUT YOU WILL. PLUS BRIGHT EYES, DRIVE BY TRUCKERS AND MORE!

BUY VINYL HERE

Mogwai have always seemed to have a much better sense of humor than most of their peers. While most of the bands that sound like them opt for either brooding, austere soundscapes or breathtakingly ethereal musical collages, the Scottish five-piece have a knack for poking fun at everything from the silliness of the genre they’re often lumped into (Really? Post-rock is the best you can come up with?) to the stagnancy of much of today’s music by toying around with dynamics and silence to shake things up aurally.

As far as faults go, though, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will is pretty spotless. The band proves they’re as skilled as ever when it comes to entertaining with just their instruments. If you can manage to listen past the lack of conventional song structures and vocals, Hardcore… will likely be a very pleasant listen. It’s a striking snapshot of a band on top of their ever-evolving game, with a fair amount of surprises thrown in for good measure. –MC

For every fan of Conor Oberst, there has been a moment when this precocious voice of troubled youth has come of age; to my mind, this really is the one. What sets The People’s Key apart from Oberst’s prodigious output over the past 15 years isn’t its lyrical density or conceptual assurance, but the taut, bright, propulsive vitality of its musicianship.

This is practically a pop album – albeit a pop album about time, the universe, life as a hallucination and spiritual redemption. ‘Jejune Stars’ rattles off an exuberant chorus that lodges immovably in the mind, and elates, despite articulating an existential crisis precipitated by the weather.

The album is abundant in such choruses, bound together by a chugging, playful rhythm (‘Haile Selassie’), stabbed by authoritative guitars (‘Shell Games’), or embedded in coruscating electronic effects (‘Triple Spiral’) that, in earlier albums, would have disintegrated into chaos. It’s as if Bright Eyes have finally exited their bedroom and entered a brave new musical world. — Guardian

BRIGHT EYES SCAVENGER HUNT WINNER!

In what has to be a world record or something, Ashley Durand found the Bright Eyes autographed vinyl mere seconds after we posted the photo.

Ashley’s strategy: Camping out at the store this morning and obsessively checking her smartphone for the post. Now, that’s smart.

As for the rest of you, Bright Eyes’ new album The People’s Key is available at The Record Exchange for the $9.99 Right Price on CD and $21.99 on vinyl.
