ABOUT JAKE SHIMABUKURO

6PAN1T.E1 [Converted].epsConsider the humble ukulele. It’s an adaptation of a stringed instrument that traveled with Portuguese immigrants who came to work in the sugar cane fields of Hawaii. Islanders made the “machete” their own, mixing external influences of classical European music and Spanish guitar with Hawaiian songs. Native Hawaiians renamed the little machete the ukulele and it’s become synonymous with Hawaiian music and Hawaiian culture.

Jake Shimabukuro comes from that same process of mixing both island and outside influences, both modern and historical. He’s combined the qualities of a long line of virtuoso ukulele players with modern rock musicians to create a sound that’s uniquely his own but still firmly grounded in Hawaiian tradition.

Growing up in Hawaii, Jake’s influences include legendary ukulele players like Eddie Kamae, Ohta-San and Peter Moon. Jake also credits icons like Bruce Lee and Michael Jordan as a source of inspiration.

Known for his energetic strumming on the ukulele, Jake’s performance incorporates elements of thoughtful, sophisticated arrangements to spontaneous, improvised passages. In addition to his original compositions, his repertoire includes Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jake’s life has always centered on the ukulele. He started playing at the age of four, urged by his mother who also played.

Jake began his music career in the mid-’90s, performing at local coffee shops as a sideman with his first band, Pure Heart. But Jake’s solo career began in 2002 when he signed with Epic Records, becoming the first ukulele player to sign with Sony Music. While his well-received solo releases positioned Jake as an established musician in Hawaii and Japan, his career skyrocketed when a cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral on YouTube with more than 13 million views, opening the rest of the world’s eyes to Jake and his unique playing style.

In the years since the YouTube clip aired, Jake has collaborated with an array of artists that include Yo-Yo Ma, Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Dave Koz, Michael McDonald, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Tommy Emmanuel and Lyle Lovett – as well as orchestras around the world. He’s sold out world-class venues, played at Bonnaroo, SXSW, the Playboy Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, the influential TED conference and even performed for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, England.

He has topped Billboard’s World Music Chart numerous times, been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone Magazine, which also stated: “one of the hottest axemen of the past few years doesn’t actually play guitar.” He has also won accolades from the disparate likes of Eddie Vedder, who states “Jake is taking the instrument to a place that I can’t see anybody else catching up with”; been talked about by Perez Hilton and Dr. Sanjay Gupta; wowed audiences on national TV with appearances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Good Morning America,” and “The Today Show”; and along the way has earned comparisons to musical innovators such as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. Jake has been the subject of an award winning documentary “Jake Shimabukuro: Life On Four Strings,” currently on Netflix.

Jake also travels to schools around the world and spreads positive messages to young people, encouraging them to find their passion and live drug-free.

Although he is constantly touring, playing 140 shows a year, Jake and his family continue to make Hawaii their home.

94.9 FM THE RIVER PRESENTS ANDERSON EAST LIVE AT THE RECORD EXCHANGE OCT. 13 – HIS ONLY SHOW IN TOWN!

anderson-east_wide-e8ec26366e230e965cac4f191c80f2e2037da1ef-s900-c8594.9 FM The River presents Anderson East live at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St. in Downtown Boise) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. This is East’s only show in town! As always, this Record Exchange in-store event is free and all ages.

ABOUT ANDERSON EAST

anderson_east_cover“…Eclectic, fully formed debut album.” —NPR Music

“With an earthy rasp beyond his years, he draws inspiration from Tom Jones and the soul-rock songwriter George Jackson.” —Philadelphia Inquirer

“These are Sam Cooke-caliber love songs…He is a spectacular talent, and releases like this one are as thrilling as they come.”— Daytrotter

“His voice is full of gravely soul, easily tackling both piano ballads and foot-stompers, going head-to-head with a gospel chorus thanks to a killer range and often heartbreaking lyrics.” —Rolling Stone Country, “20 Reasons to Love This Year”

Anderson East’s full-length debut, Delilah, is out now to widespread acclaim on Low Country Sound/Elektra Records—the first release on producer Dave Cobb’s new imprint. In celebration of the release, East recently made his network television debut on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” performing his new single “Satisfy Me.” Watch the full performance here: http://tinyurl.com/AndersonSethMeyers.

In support of the album, East is performing nationwide throughout the fall, including dates alongside The Lone Bellow and Jason Isbell. Of his recent performance at Triple A Radio’s NON-COMMvention, Dan DeLuca of the Philadelphia Inquirer praises, “Anderson East was an eye opener. I assumed the Alabama singer was a roots-rock-country singer, from bills I’d seen his name on. But he is in fact a wicked soul wailer with a huge voice, a skinny white guy with a raspy, weathered sound coming out his body that defied expectation. Definitely worthy of further investigation.” Additionally, Entertainment Weekly asserts, “Anderson East likes to groove. Live, his shoofly pie-sweet drawl and blues-influenced backing is simultaneously euphoric and mommy-and-daddy-need-some-time-alone sexy.”

Released to widespread acclaim, NPR Music’s Ann Powers calls Delilah “…a homecoming of sorts for this Athens, Ala., native, whose shoofly pie-sweet drawl and fondness for Wilson Pickett-style shouts fit perfectly within the classic soul settings he and Cobb create…East has a gruff way with phrasing and a lot of youthful enthusiasm, but he’s learning his way into mastery. There’s thought behind every rhythmic push and melismatic twist,” while Yahoo Music declares, “It’s hard to not get excited by this authentic-sounding slice of southern R&B courtesy of Nashville’s Anderson East…No excess, expressive stuff, and the sort of sincere musical statement 2015 sorely needs.”

In addition to this critical praise, “Satisfy Me” recently debuted at #28 on the AAA Radio chart with rotation at various tastemaker stations, including L.A.’s KCSN, Philadelphia’s WXPN, Nashville’s WRLT and Kansas City’s KTBG. A live video of the song, which was shot at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala., premiered at NPR Music and can now be viewed here: http://tinyurl.com/AndersonSatisfyMe.

Of Anderson, producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell) comments, “You don’t hear voices like that everyday. The first time I saw him was at the Bluebird in Nashville—he started to sing and shut the place down. And he had the charm and wit to completely hold the audience in the palm of his hand. When I got the chance to have my imprint LCS, he was the first person I wanted to sign. When he sings you can hear the soil and landscape of great southern soul in his voice and he’s an amazing writer as well.”

ABOUT JOSH RITTER AND ‘SERMON ON THE ROCKS’

JR_Sermon_Album_Cover_itunes“…I wanted to make something grand. I wanted it to swing hard. I wanted to peek through death’s keyhole. I wanted my monster to run …” – Josh Ritter

Sermon on the Rocks, the new album from critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, will be released October 16 on Pytheas Recordings/Thirty Tigers. In advance of the release, the first single, “Getting Ready To Get Down,” premiered last month at NPR Music.

Produced by Ritter and Trina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age, Emmylou Harris), the 12-song album was recorded over two weeks at New Orleans’ The Parlor Recording Studio and features Matt Barrick from The Walkmen on drums, Zachariah Hickman on bass, Josh Kaufman on guitar and Sam Kassirer on piano.

Of his inspiration behind Sermon on the Rocks, Ritter comments, “I wanted to play messianic oracular honky-tonk.”

Over the course of his acclaimed career, Ritter has released seven full-length albums, including his most recent, 2013’s The Beast In Its Tracks, which debuted at #22 on the Billboard 200 and #8 on the Top Rock Albums chart. The record also received widespread critical praise—NPR Music called it “…gorgeous and glorious,” while Pitchfork asserted, “Beast is contemplative and forgiving, a means of burying one relationship to commit to another, and Ritter nicely evokes the excitement and resignation of such a transition.” Additionally, in 2011, Ritter made is debut as a published author with his New York Times best-selling novel, Bright’s Passage (Dial Press/Random House). Of the work, Stephen King writes in The New York Times Book Review, “Shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime…This is the work of a gifted novelist.”
