• NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: OFF! FIRST FOUR EPs

We are more than super excited to be the first download store to offer the first full group of songs from the band OFF! Inspired by bands like Black Flag and California punk bands of yore, they are pushing an honest and straightforward dose of punk rock.

The band formed by Keith Morris (Circle Jerks/Black Flag) also features Burning Brides guitarist Dimitri Coats on guitar, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane Mcdonald and Hot Snakes/Earthless/Rocket From The Crypt drummer Mario Rubalcaba. All of these players bring real skills and the proper attitude to this project. The songs are short bursts of pure energy with no interference or overthinking getting in the way. • ARTIST TO WATCH: SHADOW SHADOW SHADE (ONLY $5.99!)

L.A. buzz band Shadow Shadow Shade release their debut album Shadow Shadow Shade on Public Records. It jumps out the gate with “Is This A Tempest In The Shape Of A Bell,” which sounds like Brian Eno fronting early Pink Floyd.

I guess it’s no wonder that this seven-piece band see themselves as a big art project more than a rock group. The members include a producer, an opera singer (you can’t miss her) and various other art type folks. The vocal arrangements are quite startling in their complexity and tonal quality.

I guess the thing that really gets me about this group, is the depth of the music and the vision put into the entire project. From the cover art to individual notes, you can tell they give a shit. They conjure bands like the Mama’s And Papas, Queen, Roxy Music and the already mentioned Pink Floyd. The new album’s on sale for $5.99, which makes it easy to afford. I promise the music is not cheap and it will keep you wondering where these guys have been hiding all these years. – radiofreedavis@thinkindie

IT’S NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S CHRISTMAS IN THE RX GIFT SHOP

Here at Downtown Boise’s Biggest and Best Gift Shop, we may champion the unconventional, but that doesn’t mean we’re a Scrooge about the holidays.

No, we like to celebrate the season, and celebrate it the only way we know how — funktastically. And that means unique, kooky, sometimes blush-inducing ornaments, decorations and greeting cards. And the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Now, as for gift-giving, there’s a reason it’s call a gift shop, and ours is chock full of ideas, including rock ‘n’ roll calendars, music tees and collectibles, jewelry, home wares, books, stocking surprises, goofy office gifts, action figures (now including Big Lebowski!), toys (including organic and BPA-free items!), board games, posters, stickers and much much more.

We have traditional stuff, too — so don’t let Jack Skellington or that Christmas card with the f-bomb scare you or Grandma away.

NEW DVD/BLU-RAY: LENNON NYC

BUY THE DVD HERE

Lennon NYC is the story of one of the most famous and influential artists of the 20th Century, and how he found redemption not in the public adoration he craved as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of fatherhood. And, though he wasn’t a typical immigrant, his story is certainly an immigrant’s tale.

John Lennon came to New York City in 1971, seeking what every other immigrant who has washed up on its shores has sought: freedom — the freedom to be himself and not “Beatle John,” the freedom to love without the overwhelming public scorn he and Yoko had suffered in London, and, simply, the freedom to live a normal life.

Lennon NYC tells this story with never before-released in-studio recordings, concert film only recently transferred to HD, and a trove of Lennon/Ono compositions — some in versions previously unheard. It also contains interviews with those closest to Lennon during this period in his life — friend and photographer Bob Gruen; musical collaborator and drummer Jim Keltner; May Pang, Lennon’s companion during his “lost weekend”; rock superstar Elton John; and Jack Douglas, the producer of Double Fantasy. Lennon NYC also contains one of the most powerful and emotionally direct interviews Yoko Ono has ever given. No film about John Lennon has ever covered this story with the same breadth and depth as Lennon NYC.

As the public turns its attention to what would have been Lennon’s 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his murder, Lennon NYC uniquely commemorates the life of one of the most important and influential artists of the 2oth Century — someone whose life and work is as powerful and relevant today as it has ever been.

THE VINYL WORD: THE ALBUM THAT STARTED THE SWELL SEASON

BUY THE VINYL HERE

Through everything — endless years of being labeled the “next big thing,” tours to all the remotest corners of this country and many others, the disintegration of record deals — frontman Glen Hansard has always kept faith with The Frames. As a result, The Swell Season — a collaborative project with Czech singer/pianist Marketa Irglova — is his first album independent of the band.

There are few frills on The Swell Season. Recorded in Prague over just four days with a simple, stripped-down quartet — Irglova’s piano and Hansard’s guitar, bolstered by Marja Tuhkanen on violin and Bertrand Galen’s cello — the album spans the downward trajectory of a doomed relationship.

There’s painful yearning in the heartbreaking “Falling Slowly” (“Take this sinking boat and point it home/We’ve still got time, raise your hopeful voice”), self-loathing (“Leave”) and despair (“Sleeping” — “And all that you’ve ever owned/Is packed in the hall to go And how am I supposed to live without you?”).

The centerpiece of the album is Irglova’s piano-driven title song, three minutes of perfect melancholy. She has an airy, pure voice which combines beautifully with Hansard’s throughout the album, most memorably on “Lies” and “Drown Out.” But it’s also strong enough to stand alone on (slightly) hopeful closing track “Alone Apart.”

Perfect end-of-the-evening listening, The Swell Season is a beautiful, soul-wrenching album. — RTE
