IN THE RECORD EXCHANGE GIFT SHOP: COOL KITCHENWARE FOR CHRISTMAS!

So, what exactly is the “Beyond” in Bed, Bath and Beyond? We think it’s short for “Beyond Lame.”

Then again, The Record Exchange Gift Shop has an assortment of kitchenware that we’d throw into a “who’s got the cooler stuff?” contest any day of the week. So we’re a bit bias.

As for you, chances are you have someone on your list who needs something for the kitchen. Or maybe you’re throwing a holiday party and need a conversation starter. Either way, whether it’s for eating, drinking, cooking or serving, you’re bound to find what you need in our kitchenware collection, which includes:

Sustainable Futures drinking glasses, vases and candle holders made from recycled wine bottles.

• Record Exchange coffee mugs, shot glasses and cups.

• Funky stuff from Fred, including the Winestein (a beer stein inside a wine glass) and Yumbots Robot Cupcake Models (pictured).

• The Mustache Egg Fryer (doubles as a cookie cutter).

• Unique ice tray molds.

• Musical cooking utensils.

• Much, much more!

On Thanksgiving night, viewers who were tuned into ABC caught the network premiere of Beyonce‘s I Am … World Tour special. The 90-minute concert film documents the singer’s 2009 international tour in support of her 2008 I Am … Sasha Fierce album.

Bonus features include a live soundtrack and a 40-page collection of never-before-seen photos from Beyonce’s journey around the world. The film was directed and edited by Beyonce, who says that it took nine months to fine tune the footage before it was ready for release. • NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: OFF! FIRST FOUR EPs

We are more than super excited to be the first download store to offer the first full group of songs from the band OFF! Inspired by bands like Black Flag and California punk bands of yore, they are pushing an honest and straightforward dose of punk rock.

The band formed by Keith Morris (Circle Jerks/Black Flag) also features Burning Brides guitarist Dimitri Coats on guitar, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane Mcdonald and Hot Snakes/Earthless/Rocket From The Crypt drummer Mario Rubalcaba. All of these players bring real skills and the proper attitude to this project. The songs are short bursts of pure energy with no interference or overthinking getting in the way. • THINKINDIE EXCLUSIVE: CHRISTINE OWMAN

This young lady has already started to build up a reputation of explosive live shows: headbanging to obscure movie projections from the ’20s and ’30s, playing the saw, the cello, the ukulele and singing through effect pedals.

Born in Sweden, Christine Owman lived a couple of years in the States as a child. She has worked and toured with a number of talented, well-known artists in different constallations throughout the years; members of the Cardigans (Magnus Svenningsson, Lasse Johansson and Bengt Lagerberg), Bebe Risenfors (Tom Waits and Elvis Costello’s bands), Erik Nilsson (Irya’s Playground, Ane Brun’s and Nina Kinert’s bands), Conny Nimmersjo (Bob Hund), Ebbot Lundberg (The Soundtrack of Our Lives), Ola Frick (Moonbabies), Cecilia Nordlund (Cilihili, Fever Ray), Irya Gmeyner and Andi Almqvist.

Owman has been touring all over Europe these past months – from Russia to the UK to Iceland. She recently toured Canada for the first time, where she played at Calgary Opera Centre (during Sled Island) and sold out all her merch on her first show in Canada!

• ARTIST TO WATCH: SHADOW SHADOW SHADE (ONLY $5.99!)

L.A. buzz band Shadow Shadow Shade release their debut album Shadow Shadow Shade on Public Records. It jumps out the gate with “Is This A Tempest In The Shape Of A Bell,” which sounds like Brian Eno fronting early Pink Floyd.

I guess it’s no wonder that this seven-piece band see themselves as a big art project more than a rock group. The members include a producer, an opera singer (you can’t miss her) and various other art type folks. The vocal arrangements are quite startling in their complexity and tonal quality.

I guess the thing that really gets me about this group, is the depth of the music and the vision put into the entire project. From the cover art to individual notes, you can tell they give a shit. They conjure bands like the Mama’s And Papas, Queen, Roxy Music and the already mentioned Pink Floyd. The new album’s on sale for $5.99, which makes it easy to afford. I promise the music is not cheap and it will keep you wondering where these guys have been hiding all these years. – radiofreedavis@thinkindie

A SPECIAL CD FOR A SPECIAL CAUSE AVAILABLE AT THE BONUS CLUB SALE

The Record Exchange is honored to offer a special local CD release featuring the late Charley Mixon at our annual Bonus Club Sale on Monday, Dec. 6. Proceeds from the Mista Cha’ley CD, limited to 250 copies, will benefit the The Allumbaugh House.

Here’s more information on the CD from Charley’s sister, Charlotte Lanier:

On August 17, 2009, Charles (Charley) Lynnwood Mixon passed away after a brief battle with cancer. He had been a performing musician for over forty years as a vocalist and harmonica player with numerous bands. Charley always dreamed of recording an album of songs that represented his musical tastes. The day before he died, some friends arranged for him to record at a local studio. Even though he was in hospice care, Charley was allowed to leave and enter the recording studio. Accompanied by a guitar, his own harp and some backing vocals, Charley recorded seven of his favorite songs. The next day he told us he had done what he needed to do and then slipped away with his blues harp in his hand.

As a memorial to Charley, the friends who were in the studio that day recruited various local musicians to flesh out the songs and finish Charley’s album. They completed the seven songs and added two live recordings Charley had recorded previously with one of his bands, Cheap Date. The album is called Mista Cha’ley, and to further honor him, we decided that any proceeds from the sale of the album would be donated to The Allumbaugh House, a regional facility that offers detoxification, sobering services, and mental health crisis services to Treasure Valley residents.
