THE VINYL WORD: BATTLES ‘GLOSS DROP’ AND OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

BUY THE VINYL HERE

What do you do if you lose your lead singer? If you’re Iron Maiden or New Order you just batter on with a quickly recruited new singer, then just revel in waves of acclaim. If you’re INXS you audition a random idiot on reality TV – then sack him. After Tyondai Braxton left Battles to pursue his solo career, the remaining trio decided to not replace him altogether – a tactic that’s working out beautifully for Battles, since ‘Gloss Drop’ is sublime.

Their robotic, metallic guitars romp around, teasing out a baroque space opera that’s both seemingly measured in nano-bars and obsessed with pushing beyond the outer limits of our sonic understanding. Yet despite ‘Gloss Drop’ often sounding so like androids deep in a mercurial orgy, they manage to shake us from this delirium by a few key vocal guests. Gary Numan sings on the frenetic ‘My Machines’, whilst Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead and Yamantaka Eye from The Boredoms swing by to stitch some guttural reality into the proceedings. But Kompakt’s Matias Aguero probably steals the show on ‘Ice Cream’ – a trippy, fleshy wriggle that is packed with funk and processed riffs that is as guaranteed to induce synesthesia as make you dance. – Clash

BLACK LIPS ‘ARABIA MOUNTAIN’ AND OTHER NEW CD RECOMMENDATIONS!

Drinking champagne out of Mark Ronson’s Grammy Award may be the best move that the Black Lips have ever made. In addition to ranking among the most badass moves in recent rock history, it sparked the collaboration between the Atlanta punk rockers and the retro-minded producer on their latest album Arabia Mountain. While the pairing may seem odd, it ended up being a match made in heaven. For the first time in their history, the Black Lips’ music truly outshines their antics—an impressive feat for a band whose controversial performances have consistently overshadowed their records.

In the past, the Atlanta punk outfit’s frenetic energy came coupled with an oft-scattered musical rambunctious that turned their efforts into hit-or-miss affairs. That’s not a knock on the band’s previously released music—their catalog possesses some of the best garage rock recorded over the past decade. All too often, however, their borderline-insane behavior allowed for some leeway with their musical inconsistencies. But if the direction taken on Arabia Mountain indicates anything, it’s that the quartet of Cole Alexander, Joe Bradley, Ian St. Pé and Jared Swilley is ready to let the music speak for itself—with or without the associated circus. – Paste Magazine

NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: ARCTIC MONKEYS ‘SUCK IT & SEE’

BUY THE CD HERE

‘Suck it & See brings back the endearing immaturity preceding the notion that despite everything, Arctic Monkeys are still a gang of close friends still very much in touch with their roots. “Give me an eeny, meeny, miny, mo/Or an ip dip dog*** rock and roll” is Turner’s utterance during the blisteringly paced racket on the album’s standout track “Library Pictures”. The humourous observations are back too. On the LP’s eponymous track, we are introduced to somebody “rarer than a can of Dandelion & Burdock”, which is almost laugh out loud funny for people of a certain disposition. Life’s more simple pleasures are almost a common theme throughout the LP. “Brick By Brick” features the thrice hollered refrain “I wanna rock and roll”; the most simple of statements and one the Arctic Monkeys have used as the foundation for a good deal of their career thus far.

Despite this seeming adherence to a more tried and tested method, what really stands out here is the maturity and willingness to experiment musically. “Library Pictures” is a psychedelic wig-out, “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” features an almost Sabbath-like stomp coupled with lyrics that read like an ode to bad luck and opener “She’s Thunderstorms” is an angular and ominous ballad that starts proceedings nicely. Interestingly, there is an alternate version of “Piledriver Waltz” which made an appearance on Turner’s solo EP Submarine. This is perhaps proof that there are no egos allowed on board the good ship Monkey and shows a positive attitude; if there is something that can be reworked or made better, then don’t hold back. Commendations should be paid towards the group as musicians too. There is a sweet strand of diversity, subtle or otherwise, permeating the record and points towards the coming together of comfort and talent. – Sputnik Music
