THE VINYL WORD: NIRVANA ‘NEVERMIND’ 20TH ANNIVERSARY 4LP VINYL BOX SET!

BUY THE VINYL HERE

The Nirvana Nevermind 20th anniversary reissue is now available as a 4-LP, 180-gram heavyweight vinyl edition featuring the remastered album and B-sides, the Smart Studio sessions, boombox rehearsals and BBC sessions (40 tracks in all), a remastered CD of the original album, and digital versions of the standard and deluxe editions.

When Nevermind exploded into earshot in the autumn of 1991, it was startling: a grenade detonating in your car radio. It sounded like the end of something (the 1980s? hair metal?), or maybe the beginning of something (“alternative rock”? “Generation X”?). Today, the album has become so encrusted with myth, that it’s hard to wrap your ears around it, to really hear it. In 2005, the Library of Congress added Nevermind to its roll call of the world’s most significant recordings. It’s a museum piece, a record that merits a display in the Smithsonian. And, of course, a doorstopper 20th-anniversary box set with fantastic B sides (check “Curmudgeon,” featuring the howlingest metal- dude vocal Kurt Cobain ever recorded) and stupefying live performances; plus demos, previously unreleased BBC sessions and eight cruddy-vérité “boombox rehearsals” of Nevermind tracks.

The extras offer history lessons – and help you hear Nevermind with fresh ears. The live versions of “Breed” and “Drain You” show why Nirvana may be the greatest power trio ever: The heave and thrust of Krist Novoselic’s bass, the Bonhamworthy attack of Dave Grohl’s drums, the tumult of Cobain’s singing, which proved screaming yourself hoarse could be as powerful, and as beautiful, as any vocal style. Compare the boombox demos with the finished LP – where Cobain’s songs were burnished to a fiery glow – and you realize it was pop, not punk, that turned Nirvana into the biggest band on Earth. As works of melodic craftsmanship, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Lithium” and “Lounge Act” are up there with the best of Buddy Holly, Smokey Robinson and other genius hook masters.

DJ SHADOW ‘LESS YOU KNOW THE BETTER’ AND OTHER NEW CD RECOMMENDATIONS

BUY THE CD HERE

Constructed entirely from samples, DJ Shadow‘s 1996 debut, Endtroducing …, was a genuinely pioneering record, although this approach has been repeated so many times since that what was once futuristic can now feel nostalgic. On only his fourth album in 15 years, 39-year-old Californian Josh Davis uses longer samples and more conventional song structures to make The Less You Know, the Better feel like a genre-hopping mixtape. There’s old skool hip-hop (Back to Front), riff-shredding heavy metal (Border Crossing, I Gotta Rokk), pastoral soul (I’ve Been Trying) and eerie dubs. From Little Dragon singer Yukimi Nagano’s airy Scale It Back to the Tom Vek-sung White Lies-style doom rock of Warning Call.  The dirgey Give Me Back the Nights outstays its welcome the most, although the sublime vocal sample/piano standout Sad and Lonely shows that the simplest ideas can be the best.Guardian

NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: FEIST ‘METALS’!!

BUY THE CD HERE
BUY THE VINYL HERE

The very qualities that make Leslie Feist such a distinctive pop artist are also the very things that make her too easy to dismiss: Her understated melodies, restrained performances and thoughtful arrangements are often decried as dull, monotonous, samey—as if these are critical adjectives that require no further elaboration. Especially at a time when an album’s shelf-life can be measured in days or weeks instead of months or years, Feist makes music that requires close attention and repeated spins, and yet there’s almost always a payoff—some revelation that rewards the listener’s investment.

Above all else, Metals emphasizes Feist’s vocals, which sound as though they were recorded very closely to capture even the finest textures and subtlest tones. At times even Feist herself doesn’t seem to know what she will do from one note to the next. On “Comfort Me,” her voice launches into a short trill of notes, far outside the melodic line, which heralds an abrupt shift in tone and theme. And on “Anti-Pioneer,” she makes a concerted break from intelligible syllables to make her voice another instrument in the mix, delivering pure sound instead of words. It’s a lovely, low-key moment that reveals her most fascinating contradiction: By negating herself in the song—by making the music so quiet, by surrendering the very idea of lyrics, by keeping listeners at arms’ length at least through the first few crucial spins—Feist asserts herself all the more powerfully.Paste Magazine
