Preview tracks from On Approach at myspace.com/everest.

Championed by Neil Young, with whom the band has toured, and garnering favorable comparisons to My Morning Jacket and Wilco, Everest is currently on tour with Minus the Bear in support of On Approach. Following this run, the band will make an appearance at this year’s Bonnaroo festival June 13, then visit KCRW on June 16 for a live “Morning Becomes Eclectic” session.

Everest’s impassioned new album recalls the era of vinyl, when the story starts at track one and doesn’t end until the very last note wanes. It’s not a vintage sound, but a significant statement of a new era of American rock ‘n’ roll, seeped in rustic grooves, infectious melodies and timelessness.

Borrowing from their home base surroundings, California makes an imprint on their sonic landscape, much like how Motown oozed Detroit and Stax screamed Memphis, the Golden State shines through unmistakably.

WE HAVE A MIXTAPE CONTEST WINNER!

Lucas Grubbs is the winner of The Record Exchange Record Store Day Mixtape Contest!

If you want a legitimate shot at winning the contest next year, look at the photo above and take notes. Lucas’ mix, titled “A Little Atomic Bomb,” is a museum-quality example of the mixtape as art. Lucas placed his CD in a recycled record sleeve (with the record still in it), wrapped it in yarn and filled the accompanying notebook with comprehensive musings on the track list, the art and craft of making a mix tape and his love of music in general.

And then there’s the mix itself: Bukowski reading his poetry, indie rock, hip-hop, country, good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, weird and wonderful randomness … This is the stuff of refined taste, studious listening and a deep record collection, meticulously mixed with continuity and listenability in mind.

You can hear “A Little Atomic Bomb,” along with runner-up Rachael Balstad‘s “The Melange-a-Trois,” this afternoon at The Record Exchange. Happy Record Store Day!

Thanks to everyone who entered a mix — the variety of music and themes far exceeded our expectations. And a special thank you to Boise Weekly A&E Editor Amy Atkins for helping us vote!
