THE VINYL WORD: LLOYD MILLER & THE HELIOCENTRICS NOW OUT ON WAX

Following their award-winning collaboration with Ethio jazz Godfather Mulatu Astake, pioneering UK collective The Heliocentrics resurfaces alongside another fascinating jazz enigma, ethno-musicologist, jazz maestro and multi-instrumental, Lloyd Miller.

Learning various instruments and immersing himself in New Orleans jazz through his father, a professional clarinet player, Lloyd Miller first trained himself in the styles of George Lewis and Jimym Giuffre and cut his first Dixieland jazz 78 rpm recorded in 1950. During the late 50 s, his father landed a job in Iran and Miller began to develop a lifelong interest in Persian and Eastern music forms, learning to play a vast array of traditional ethnic instruments from across Asia and the Middle East. He toured Europe heavily, basing himself in Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Germany (where he played with Eddie Harris and Don Ellis) and most famously, Paris where he worked with oddball bandleader Jef Gibson, a phenomenon in French jazz during the early 60 s. Miller returned to the Middle East during the 70 s, landing his own TV show on NORTV in Tehran under the name Kurosh Ali Khan. His show became a national fixture and ran for seven years.

Miller has since been a vocal ambassador for preserving the traditions of many forms of Eastern music. In recent years, his mid 60 s album Oriental Jazz has become a collectors favorite and the UK s Jazzman label has issued a compilation, A Lifetime In Oriental Jazz, covering work from across his career. The renewed interest in his music has spawned this new collaboration with The Heliocentrics, a freeform mix of Eastern arrangements, jazz and angular psychedelics and represents the Heliocentrics most accomplished work to date.

THE VINYL WORD: WAVVES’ QUEST FOR AN ENDLESS SUMMER OUT NOW ON WAX

King of the Beach, the new Wavves album is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat zatharsis and ’60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation. Unlike Wavves’ previously released material, recorded in I haphazard bursts on Williams’ laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record.

THE VINYL WORD: MENOMENA’S FOURTH FULL-LENGTH ALBUM OUT ON WAX PLUS A LIMITED EDITION GATEFOLD DOUBLE 7″

With Mines, the Portland experimental rock trio Menomena‘s fourth full-length release continues where they started on their epic debut I am the Blame Fun Monster and builds upon it ingenious third album, Friend and Foe. The album warms up with the slow tempo song “Queen Black Acid,” before making way for more experimental tracks like “Taos,” a garage-rock number full of frolicking vibes, and the heavy and complex mix of guitar riffs and drum beats in “Bote.” Menomena also wonderfully mixes and matches these energetic, fast-paced numbers with mellow, calm and content songs, like “Dirty Cartoons” and “Intil,” that will automatically grow on you. You will soon realize that despite its overdone complexity, Mines doesn’t stray far from the band’s usual formula yet still manages to be magical.

EXCLUSIVE: A Mines Double Seven Inch is also available  featuring alternate versions of two album songs, plus two exclusive b-sides on this limited-edition gatefold double 7″ (limited to 1000 numbered copies worldwide).
