More importantly, we’re still listening to Tomboy every day, and we can easily throw this remix into the rotation without losing any of the sun-streaked-European-beach-at-5:30 AM-vibes of the entire record. – Fader

Chris Martin says Coldplay‘s upcoming album, ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall‘ is influenced by old-school New York graffiti, and in a recent photo the bandmates are dressed in neon chillwear like they just walked off the set of Breakin’ 3: A Brit-Pop Odyssey. But the first single doesn’t go for the sound of early hip-hop so much as its sense of year-zero possibility. Over a rave-tinged keyboard melody, leavened by producer Brian Eno’s rainforest-of-the-soul ambience, Martin sings of kids dancing until morning and heaven inside his headphones. When the drums kick in fully, it moves like “Sunday Bloody Sunday” by way of the Velvets’ “Sunday Morning,” a flag-waving ode to change-as-inspiration: “I’d rather be a comma than a full stop,” Martin sings. Coming from a guy whose critics take him for a human exclamation point, it’s a welcome sentiment. – Rollingstone

Dedication is as solid a record as it shapes up to be, an intriguing tangent to Los Angeles beat stalwarts Brainfeeder and Alpha Pup Records’ steady output of stellar instrumental hip-hop and dubstep releases. From the tongue-in-cheek gunshot/fingersnap swagger of opener “Witch Hunt” to the sinister, otherworldly  “A Devil Lay Here”, Zomby seems simultaneously more measured and frenetic than ever before. Rather than excavate his rave roots as reverently as he did on his debut, the producer bounds between styles and themes with a heady sense of attention deficit disorder (all but two tracks don’t outlive the three minute mark). Instead of detracting much from the record’s power though, it’s that nebulous, unfocused energy that drives most of the album: Dedication doesn’t quite go anywhere, nor does it seem to have to.

An obvious highlight is the Panda Bear collabo “Things Fall Apart”, on which the Animal Collective luminary sounds oddly at home toasting over a menacing dub skitter. While little of the album bears the immediate impact of Zomby’s best work (“Tears in the Rain”, “Spliff Dub”), this latest offering from the spectral producer proves much more enduring a record than he seemed capable of a couple of years back and one that makes as solid a case as is imaginable for integrating dubstep into the mainstream as one of the genre’s first great releases on a label not named Hyperdub or NinjaTune. And with 4AD’s signing of star producer Joker, Dedication certainly won’t be the last. – Consequence Of Sound

If Alison Krauss felt any pressure when she went in to record Paper Airplanes, her follow-up to 2004’s triple Grammy-winning Lonely Runs Both Ways and Raising Sand, her collaboration with Robert Plant — which went on to garner an additional six Grammys – it is impossible to hear it anywhere on the album. Whatever blood, sweat and tears were shed during the creation of this beautifully realized cycle of songs are invisible as each performance comes off as exhilarating, natural and blissfully unforced. In every instance, Paper Airplanes rises to the impossibly high bar set by its predecessors to form what may well be the finest album Krauss has ever released.

The sound Alison Krauss and her longtime bandmates in Union Station create continues to express an intuition and flow that is rarely heard in country music. Dan Timinski’s pristine guitar playing and worn-in vocals are as essential and impressive as ever, while bluegrass legend Jerry Douglas’ dobro playing is stellar throughout. But, not surprisingly, Krauss’ vocals are the centerpiece, and her mezzo soprano has never sounded as pure as it does on this new set of songs. Her range continues to stagger, and nowhere is this more evident than it is on her cover of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Dimming of the Day.” While she wisely chooses not to descend into the heart of darkness that washed over the original version, Krauss effortlessly holds each note as she pulls off the long phrases and diabolical range required without ever faltering, effortlessly walking the line between sugary sweetness and tragic desperation to bring the song home. – Paste
