NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: 1990s ALT-ROCK SURVIVORS TOADIES DELIVER THEIR BEST ALBUM SINCE REFORMING

PREVIEW/BUY CD HERE

When it comes to twitchy, psychotic rock, Toadies remains the band to beat. “Possum Kingdom” was as much a blueprint as it was a ’90s alt-rock hit. On Play.Rock.Music., the best yet of the albums the band has made since reforming in 2006 after a five-year breakup, Toadies zigzag through fast, jumpy rock ’n’ roll (“Rattler’s Revival”), narcotic balladry (“Sunshine”), and fuzzed-out, psychedelic blues (“Animals”). On this outing, Toadies push off into some fresh directions. Holding it together is the band’s cinematic perspective, with singer Vaden Todd Lewis very good in acting and producing roles. In “Summer of the Strange,” Lewis directs the unraveling of a frightening tale of sanity slipping away. “Magic Bullet” and “Laments of a Good Man” mine familiar Toadies turf — dark impulses sparked by despair. But before anyone dismisses Toadies as misanthropic, Lewis signs off with the genuinely tender “The Appeal.” — Boston Globe

GASLIGHT ANTHEM'S 'HANDWRITTEN' AND OTHER NEW CD RECOMMENDATIONS

PREVIEW/BUY CD HERE
PREVIEW/BUY DELUXE EDITION CD HERE

The reason The Gaslight Anthem was able to write the best record of its career-so-far, and the frontrunner for 2012’s album of the year, is probably more a result of The Horrible Crowes than most of us really know. “I was bored,” Brian Fallon said. “After the last record for Gaslight Anthem, I was just bored. I still had the desire to write, but I didn’t want to write any more rock and roll songs. I was in this weird mood.” So he wrote Elsie with Ian Perkins, a darker, slower, brooding cauldron of an album that was nearly perfect – for what it was. Elsie somehow set off a switch, and returning with guitarist Alex Rosamilia, bassist Alex Levine and drummer Benny Horowitz enabled The Gaslight Anthem to write more freely than ever.

Handwritten is the The Gaslight Anthem’s most versatile work. It combines the raw rock and roll sound of The ’59 Sound with the best soulful parts from American Slang and Elsie. Fallon’s voice is absolutely in its best shape, as the croon we heard with The Horrible Crowes strongly complements his rougher vocal parts. Most interestingly, we find a lighthearted and jovial vibe to the album at times, harkening to the Senor and The Queen EP more than anything else. But Handwritten still brings something new to the table, and what else should we expect?

The group’s influences are still abundant on the record – there’s some Bob Dylan in the harmonica on the rhythmic “Keepsake,” there’s some heavy Tom Petty on the phenomenal closer “National Anthem,” and some The Rising or Magic-era Bruce Springsteen on another highlight in “Here Comes My Man.” The latter of those three has a killer bassline and “ooh-sha-la-la” bits that would catch the attention of even the E Street Band’s backup vocalists. But we know better than to overplay the talk of influences at this point in Gaslight’s career – this is a group that has reinvented itself twice now, a group with much more than a modicum of pressure accompanying its major label debut, a group that can change faces with its versatility while remaining very much itself.

The ’59 Sound. American Slang. Handwritten. The Gaslight Anthem presents its case-so-far. As listeners, as fans of music, we’ve already hit the lottery here. — Absolute Punk

ASCETIC JUNKIES IN-STORE JULY 25; TREEFORT FAVS RETURN TO THE RX!

Treefort Music Fest favorites The Ascetic Junkies will perform live at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St., Downtown Boise) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 25. As always, this Record Exchange in-store performance is free and all ages. The band is performing a full set at Flying M Coffeegarage in Nampa later that evening!

Back in March, The Ascetic Junkies performed a memorable Secret Treefort In-store at the RX, and we’re excited to welcome them back to the store!

ABOUT THE ASCETIC JUNKIES

The Ascetic Junkies are a pop band with more than a passing interest in Americana, noise and psychedelic song structure quirks. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, they’ve been inciting audiences to dance and sweat all over the West Coast and beyond since 2008. The band has its roots in a merging of rock and bluegrass, but after self-releasing an album in 2008, they started indulging in the pop/Americana/indie realm. Since then, they’ve constantly evolved their sonic palette without losing the core focus of their sound, which has been made easier by the distinct sound of their dual-lead-vocal center. Kali and Matt write the songs, and Cole and Stephen help take them and twist them into something unique, fun, and shape-shifting. They have gathered fond comparisons within the pop world as diverse as The Avett Brothers, The New Pornographers and The Dirty Projectors.

Through the last four years, the Ascetic Junkies have self-released two albums and seen a third released on Portland indie label Timber Carnival Records, toured often all over the Northwest, West Coast and Northeast and had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such national acts as Nicole Atkins, Warpaint, Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside and Asobi Seksu. In 2011, their received several honors on their home turf, including having tracks featured on the prestigious PDX Pop Now! compilation and Tender Loving Empire’s “Friends and Friends of Friends Vol. 4,” and having a self-produced music video highlighted and screened at NW Film Fest.

2012 finds the band planning to tour more than ever, recording a lot of new electrified material that intentionally sits on the border between “really catchy” and “pretty weird” and taking in the sights while driving back and forth across the country to bring their tunes to fans in towns big and small.
