THE VINYL WORD: HIGH ON FIRE'S DEBUT ALBUM REISSUED BY SOUTHERN LORD!

PREVIEW/BUY THE VINYL HERE

Following the long, drawn-out demise of his former band, legendary doomsters Sleep (whose final album, Dopesmoker, was tied up in legal squabbles and went unreleased for years), guitarist Matt Pike finally unleashed years of pent-up song writing into a new stoner rock trio called High on Fire. On the band’s first effort for Man’s Ruin Records, 2000’s The Art of Self Defense, Pike’s instantly recognizable snarling guitar tone is the most obvious remnant from his Sleep days. But on outstanding tracks like “Baghdad” and “Blood From Zion,” his previous group’s snail-paced grind is replaced by driving riffs and thunderous drums that sound positively upbeat by comparison. The album also sees Pike tackling lead vocals for the first time (bassist Al Cisneros handled vocal duties in Sleep), and though his voice is buried somewhat low in the overall mix (lack of confidence perhaps?), this only places more emphasis on the true focus of High on Fire — his bludgeoning guitar riffs. The heaviest of these serves as the backbone for the album’s best track “Last,” which simply must be heard to be believed. — allmusic

GREEN DAY'S 'HOOK-SAVVY MOSH-PIT POP' AND OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

PREVIEW/BUY THE CD HERE
PREVIEW/BUY THE DELUXE CD HERE

Just when you thought Green Day didn’t make albums like this anymore – 12 blasts of hook-savvy mosh-pit pop, cut hot and simple with no operatic agenda – singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool do three at once and issue them in rapid-fire installments. It’s lunacy, of course, in what now passes for the music business.

In fact, Green Day’s triple play with longtime co-producer Rob Cavallo is the way things used to be. In 1964 alone, the Beatles put out two albums, three singles and two EPs in Britain; the next year, the Rolling Stones whipped out five singles and three LPs in the U.S. ¡Uno! is Green Day’s first studio album in three years, but they deliver it like late-breaking news, with mid-Sixties-guitar clamor, ’77 velocity and no breathing room. Every track is written like a single – the glam-Jam jolt of “Nuclear Family,” the Cheap Trick-style zoom and vocal sunshine of “Fell for You” – then thrown at you like a grenade. The action continues with ¡Dos! in November. Seven weeks with ¡Uno! will leave you in shape, and hungry, by then. — Rolling Stone

HAYES CARLL RECORD EXCHANGE ALIVE AFTER FIVE SEASON FINALE SEPT. 26!

Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 26, for the annual end of season Record Exchange Party at Alive After Five with headliner Hayes Carll. This free, all-ages concert on the Grove Plaza in Downtown Boise kicks off at 5 p.m. and will wrap up at 9 p.m. Local artist Matti Sand will open.

ABOUT HAYES CARLL

Hayes Carll is an odd mix. Wildly literate, utterly slackerly, impossibly romantic, absolutely a slave to the music, the 35-year old Texan is completely committed to the truth and unafraid to skewer pomposity, hypocrisy and small-minded thinking. Last year, “Another Like You,” Carll’s stereotypes attract duet of polar opposites, was American Songwriter’s #1 Song of 2011 – and KMAG YOYO was the Americana Music Association’s #1 Album, as well as making best-of lists for Rolling Stone, SPIN and a New York Times Critics Choice.

But more importantly than the critical acclaim is the way Carll connects with music lovers across genres lines. Playing rock clubs and honkytonks, Bonnaroo, Stones Fest, SXSW and NXNE, he and his band the Gulf Coast Orchestra merge a truculent singer/songwriter take that combines Ray Wylie Hubbard’s lean, freewheeling squalor with Todd Snider’s brazen Gen Y reality and a healthy dose of love amongst unhealthy people.
