TEGAN & SARA'S HEARTTHROB AND OTHER NEW RX CD RECOMMENDATIONS

Heartthrob+High+Quality+PNG-440323_250x250PREVIEW/BUY THE CD HERE

One of the most impressive aspects about Tegan and Sara is their commitment in honing their craft in such a way as to make every new album that much better than the one preceding it. Heartthrob is easily the most pop-oriented, head-bopping, non-stop, catchy-tune-after-catchy-tune, thrill ride they have ever produced. In an effort to gain a bigger audience—and I’m sorry, but any music act that wants to maintain a tiny cult following so as to not appear to be “selling out” are either fools or liars, or both—Tegan and Sara made a conscious effort to ride the wave of bigger sounding, brighter indie pop tunes that are slowly but surely ingratiating their way onto the tired radio waves.

With Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara have stepped out on that metaphorical cliff. The outcome could result in very few new listeners and an alienation of their existing fanbase who clamour for more of Tegan and Sara’s signature rock/pop style. Or, what is more likely, the album will be embraced by more people than ever, and those already rabid die-hard Tegan and Sara fans will take the girls up on their request to get a little bit closer. Either way, the girls can be proud that their efforts have produced the best record of their career, and quite possibly, one of the best records of the year. The girls have officially thrown their hat in the already gorged pop music scene, and other acts should be forewarned—this is an act that can duke it out with the best of them. — Pop Matters

NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: BEN HARPER AND CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE

If a case needs to be made for blues music in the mainstream – and really, given the story of Adele, it shouldn’t – this meeting of crack talents from two generations fits the brief.

Ben Harper has been exploring the rootsy end of the pop spectrum for more than 20 years without ever identifying himself with a genre. He has mixed vintage jazz with beatboxing and even covered “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

But it has been in dialogue that his gifts have flourished, and the passing years have found him an increasingly productive collaborator.

“I only know one tune,” has been Charlie Musselwhite’s confession – but what a tune. This is the veteran whose third wedding featured John Lee Hooker as best man, and since his sensational debut in the 60s blues boom he has earned an unequalled reputation as a harmonica man.

Now sweet, now rasping, and always chorusing and counterpointing with the keenest ears around, Musselwhite’s dialogue with Harper’s soulful tenor and punchy guitar is pure Astaire and Rogers.

All the way through, Musselwhite’s subtle, rich-toned commentary maintains a focus. So you’ll hear echoes of Jimi Hendrix, the Blind Boys and even the laidback groove of Jack Johnson here, but make no mistake: this is the blues. — BBC

THE VINYL WORD: LOCAL NATIVES RETURN 'WRENCHING WITH SEVERITY'

Gorilla Manor: goofy name for a young band hoping to be taken seriously for their full-hearted hooks. There was no guarantee Local Natives’ 2009 album would take off the way that it did, or take off at all for that matter. As is frequently the case with debuts, there remained a sad likelihood that it would end up not as a career-launch, but rather a photo album to be looked back upon fondly. In fact, that’s exactly what it sounded like: documentation of friends holing up and having a little fun while they could.

As a result, Manor was an overwhelmingly positive album. Three years later, on Hummingbird, the four remaining members of Local Natives link up once again; this time, with a couple concessions about death. Hummingbird is, in a phrase, pretty damn bleak. Between Kelcey Ayer’s heartbreaking recollection of his mother’s last breaths on “Colombia” to the man pictured on the cover futilely trying to resist being swept away from solid ground, it’s clear that the Los Angeles harmonizers are no longer brazenly jumping off the deep end together. This album is full of sober surrender.

Be that as it may, Hummingbird’s sonic palette makes Gorilla Manor seem monochromatic and lo-fi by comparison. With no small thanks to The National’s Aaron Dessner, who auspiciously came on board as producer,  Hummingbird is jam-packed with textural traces of several key indie touchstones: Veckatimest, Bon Iver, and yes, High Violet.

They’ve come a long way since being ‘the band that opened for Arcade Fire.’ Hummingbird proves that these guys are maturing into a sound that’s both singular and wrenching with severity. — Consequence of Sound
