THE VINYL WORD: MIIKE SNOW'S HAPPY TO YOU AND OTHER NEW RELEASES!

BUY THE VINYL HERE

In about every way that it possibly could, Miike Snow’s second album, Happy to You, improves on its predecessor, building considerably on their already expansive sound, while honing said sound into an effort that’s much more nuanced and cohesive, much more a proper album than Miike Snow’s rather disparate, though very enjoyable, collection of songs. Nearly all of the songs here are far less immediate than anything on Miike Snow, perhaps due in part to the amount of time on the road they had to develop them.

What’s most notable about the album is the glaring absence of a monolithic, earth-rending banger from a team of guys who’ve made a career of cranking them out by the truckload. While it’s still brimming with more indelible hooks and infectious dance grooves than most acts manage to write over the course of several albums, Happy to You is defined by its willful introversion, the sort of rare pop record that acts completely on its own terms. While Karlsson and Winnberg continue to assert themselves as two of the most accomplished producers in contemporary music, Happy to You does well to prove they’re just as good on the other side of the mixing console, showcasing the furthest extents of their own considerable talents for the second straight album. — Consequence of Sound

NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE'S 'NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE THE WAY YOU FEEL …'

BUY THE VINYL HERE

Personal struggles with addiction and troubles with the law, not to mention the connection of his folk-royalty father, Steve Earle, have meant that Earle the Younger, gifted as he is, has always had a specific narrative attached to him and his music. It’s not like this is anything new—musicians, especially in such a story-driven genre like folk—are forever at the mercy of the narratives, mythologies and personal demons to which they are tied, making the title of this album all the more apt. When that statement is sung on the title track, a wistful, shuffling ode to a dissolving relationship, it’s with an insistence and almost a sense of calm, as if Earle, too, is letting us know that he’s more than aware of what we all think of him, of the narratives attached to him, and he’s alright with that.

This is where we’re at with Justin Townes Earle, who opens his latest album with the line, “Hear my father on the radio, singin’ ‘Take Me Home Again,’” following up with “Sometimes I wish that I could get away / sometimes I wish that he’d just call” and a sighed “I thought I’d be a better man.” That self-awareness comes into play again, and Earle lays it all down for us less than a minute into the album, and beautifully, amid gentle, echo-y electric picking and mournful horns that wind around his words like the Carolina coast he references.

Nothing’s Gonna Change… is ultimately the kind of album you can curl up into, let the warm tones surround you and rest easy—not in a The King of Limbs, “this-album-made-me-fall-asleep” way like but in a way that makes you feel like, “damn, everything feels right about now.” — Paste

SECRET TREEFORT IN-STORE REVEAL: BLITZEN TRAPPER TONIGHT AT 6PM!

And today’s Record Exchange Secret Treefort In-store is …

Blitzen Trapper!

The band (playing a 21+ Treefort show at Neurolux at 10 p.m. Friday) will perform a 30-minute set at 6 p.m. TODAY at The Record Exchange, 1105 W. Idaho St. in Downtown Boise. As always, this Record Exchange in-store event is free and all ages — and you don’t need a Treefort pass to attend (but you should get one anyway).

ABOUT BLITZEN TRAPPER

American Goldwing is Sub Pop’s third full-length release with Portland’s Blitzen Trapper and the band’s sixth full-length overall. Over the course of their career, they’ve earned rave reviews (from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, SPIN, and a whole lot more), played on television, appeared at festivals all around the world, done a staggering amount of touring, and sold a whole bunch of records. All of which is distinctly less interesting that what Blitzen Trapper singer/songwriter/guitarist Eric Earley has to say about the band’s new record, American Goldwing:

“It’s us letting our loves, our early influences hang out for all to see. Entering into the sounds we grew up with, the hard guitar rock and country picking of our younger years mixes with glimmers of our usual space-aging technology and pawn shop Casio aplomb. Heavy guitar riffs and blasting drum fills live side-by-side with plucking banjos and wailing harmonicas, and muddy slide guitars that make you want to shotgun a beer in the shower while listening to the Stones or Joe Walsh. It’s also our first foray into direct, outside influence in the creation of a record. It’s me letting go in a certain way. I let Tchad Blake come in to mix this album, and my good friend Gregg Williams co-produced all these tracks.

“When I sing, in the title track, ‘I know / I know / I’ll be staying if the wind don’t blow,’ I’m seeking to invoke the unseen, the spirit that beckons you to saddle up that old 1980 Honda Goldwing, or your uncle’s beat up Ford Bronco, or that Jeep you somehow, and only barely, keep running and leave this lonely town behind, ‘cause that wind’s always blowing. I’m calling you to ride, to take those curves at speed and head for someplace better where love is true, whether that be into the depths of the galaxy or just to the next truck stop where the neon shines, and where the ‘company of strangers / and the close and the present dangers’ are all that really matters.”
