A Labor Day weekend experience to enjoy with the whole family in a beautiful setting, the Hermit Music Festival features three days of national, regional and local live musical acts. The festival also showcases local performance and music organizations, food trucks and wine and beer vendors.

ABOUT IDYLTIME

Idyltime, a band originally playing bluegrass out of southern Oregon, reformed in 2011 when Beth and Tate Mason moved to Boise, Idaho. There they joined up with Dave Daley and Ava Honey, who were hosting the weekly old-time jam at Pengilly’s. Dave and Ava continue to be extremely active in developing the acoustic roots music and square dance scene in Boise. With over 40 years of fiddling, Dave brings a lifetime of musical experience to the original songwriting of Idyltime. Most people can hear a certain song and it will take them back to a prior experience, maybe to a feeling had and relived through a melody. Idyltime is comprised of four souls eternally searching for the source of this nostalgia. People often tell us that our music takes them back to a memory, and it reminds them of the good in the world.

The love of music for singer/songwriter Brook Faulk comes from the same motto that makes most businesses successful…location, location, location. Raised on a cattle ranch under the Western sky, Brook comes from a long line of real cowboys and rodeo men. She grew up listening to all the old country favorites with her dad, while driving down the long dusty roads. It was there that Brook developed her love affair with music. A throwback from the past, she began singing at a young age, quickly finding her way into the rural music scene of country fairs, coffee houses, and local honkytonks.

Her music quickly evolved with an array of influences from indie rock to traditional country. She became known for her in-depth songwriting and incredible vocal skills. Hailed as “Emotional, sensual and completely captivating, with a stunning stage presence,” Brook became the leader of the most in demand band in Anchorage, Alaska, where she performed six nights a week for several years. She recently relocated to Boise and is looking forward to a year of steady touring.

Her new album, “Down in Flames” was released in 2014.

ABOUT SHAKEY GRAVES

The fast-rising guitarist and singer Shakey Graves is riding a wave of success from his latest record, And The War Came (Dualtone Records), which he described as less “Mr. Folk, hobo mountain” and more “cyborg Shakey Graves.” The former actor established himself as a major musical force with his 2011 debut record, Roll the Bones, a raw, raucous record that he recorded at home and self-released through Bandcamp.

For the new record and subsequent tour, Shakey Graves, a.k.a. Alejandro Rose-Garcia, added a drummer to his one-man act — he often plays an old Samsonite suitcase as a kick drum. His current tour has taken him to Bonnaroo, Pickathon and the Newport Folk Festival, where he performed alongside Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples. Additionally, he wrote three songs for the new record with solo artist and Paper Bird singer Esme Patterson.

“The first album was me wanting to burn down my life, cut my hair off and run screaming into the woods. This album is the trials and tribulations of becoming domesticated, letting people into your world and letting go of selfishness…”

  Alejandro Rose-Garcia, Shakey Graves

“His singing is often characterized as ghostly, haunting. Ethereal. Equal parts agony and ecstasy, it’s raw, elemental; both lonesome-cowboy moan and possessed wolf-howl. A little Chris Whitley, a little Chris Isaak, with Jeff Buckley’s choir-boy pureness occasionally channeled for good measure, along with the hollerin’-hootenanny vibe of a wild back porch stomp.”

The original members of the Hi-Tops return to VaC’s stage for the first time since 2010, when they reunited to play sold-out shows to an audience of over 770 fans. Hi-Tops formed in the mid-1980s in Boise, becoming the band that Curtis Stigers and Steve Fulton grew up in. The group recorded two albums in the mid and late 80s and moved to San Diego together in 1988.

The original members performing include John Laufenburger, lead singer; Craig Sofaly, lead guitar and vocals; Sandon Mayhew, saxophone, lyricon and vocals; Ancel Schoberg, bass guitar; Steve Fulton, keyboards, guitar, and vocals. Guest Tim Willis will fill in on drums for the original drummer Dave Browne, who can’t make the reunion.

“We decided it was time for Hi-Tops to get together again, especially after finding out we could get the Swiveltones to play with us!” says Steve Fulton, owner of Audio Lab recording studios and original member of Hi-Tops. “Swiveltones, a super fun, high energy group, used to come home from University of Idaho for Christmas break and play each night for a week with Hi Tops at the Bouquet! We always felt like ‘we better be on our game, these kids are GREAT!’ We formed a great friendship with them and are now finally able to share the stage again with them! Led by Steve Smart and Drew Kirk, ALL the original members will be there!

Visual Arts Collective, recent recipient of The Rauschenberg Foundation Grant, is an innovative venue located in Garden City’s Live Work Create district with year-round live music, arts exhibitions, theater from Alley Repertory Theater, and special events. Stay tuned at visualartscollective.com.
