RECORD EXCHANGE STAFF PICK: MATT THE INTERN ON WILD NOTHING’S ‘GEMINI’

Wild Nothing‘s Gemini — you may have heard about it in the blogosphere — has been on heavy rotation at The Record Exchange, and Matt the Intern is here to tell you why:

So far 2010 has been a big year for bedroom pop, yet nothing has been quite as magical as Wild Nothing’s Gemini.

Meet Jack Tatum, the early twenty-year-old behind Wild Nothing who draws influences from his daydreams and the time of the ’80s. Tatum centers around his dreams, which tend to be gloomy, singing of love, loss, and escape. Musically, Wild Nothing’s sound is ethereal, dreamy guitar pop, hinting back to the styles of My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins and Johnny Marr.

Tatum’s congenital songcrafting could be the greatest element about Wild Nothing. From the first listen, it’s striking to hear such wonderful arrangements, and soon the songs make their way into everyday life. Gemini is an instant classic. It’s an album for the hopeful and the sad. Though this record is usually found in my daily rotation, I find it best on a drive through the rain or on a night walk in the pleasant summer air.

The Record Exchange has Gemini available in the store on CD and vinyl, or you can download it from our ThinkIndie Digital Store HERE.

• NEW METAL SALE PROGRAM KICKS OFF WITH $6.66 ZOROASTER

Look, metal rules, okay? Yeah, some of it is dumb, some of it is lame, but a lot of it kicks major ass. Even hipster turds keep a couple of metal bands in their back pocket for when some sad bastard band like Belle and Sebastian just ain’t feelin’ right.

This week, ThinkIndie is launching a new metal sale program, which will give you great deals on great new metal bands on a regular basis. First up is psych-metal stalwarts Zoroaster‘s sophomore album Matador for the great devilish price of $6.66. And it has great metal song titles like “Ancient Ones,” “Old World,” “Odyssey II,” and our personal favorite, “Trident” (and no, they’re not talking gum here; an actual freaking three-pronged, evil-doin’ trident).

Want to hear it first? Listen to a full album stream HERE. Want to thank us? Simply throw your devil horns in the air. We’ll feel them no matter where you are.

HEY MARSEILLES RECORD EXCHANGE IN-STORE TUESDAY, JULY 27 (6:45 P.M.)!

Indie folk-pop septet Hey Marseilles will perform live at The Record Exchange at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 27. As always, this Record Exchange in-store is free and all ages.

Purchase Hey Marseilles’ CD To Travels & Trunks at the in-store for $12.99 and get a FREE ticket to the band’s show with Toad the Wet Sprocket later that night at The Knitting Factory! (One ticket per CD purchase; quantities are limited.)

The thing about traveling is that you always end up back where you started. Ashes to ashes and all that big-picture stuff.

For Hey Marseilles, travel is as much a state of mind as location of body. This is a seven-piece Northwest band deeply rooted to its place of origin but equally anxious to get away, to see it all. Not escapism, but expansion: Listen closely to To Travels & Trunks and you’ll hear faraway places named not so much as a wish list but as incantation. The broader your horizon, the deeper your longing, the more genuine your experience.

And so, in 2008, three guys embark on a musical adventure instigated by one’s first melody on his brand-new used accordion. And, some months later, seven guys—the original trio plus a few old friends—get together in a garage in Seattle and record an album. To Travels & Trunks is both Hey Marseilles’ mission statement and its hazy dream put to music.

The Hey Marseilles sound is immediate, evocative, mostly acoustic, always emotive. It’s classically-trained brothers Sam and Jacob Anderson on cello and viola, their strings grand and mournful on To Travels & Trunks‘ sweeping title track. It’s the wheeze and moan of Philip Kobernik’s accordion, simultaneously the gawkiest and most romantic of all instruments, opening the gorgeous “From a Terrace,” and his kid-at-a-carnival Rhodes on the 6/8 spin of “Gasworks.” It’s Nick Ward’s electric guitar on the epic “Calabasas,” stretching into the distance like an open road. It’s the Dixieland swagger of Patrick Brannon’s trumpet on uptempo lead single “Rio”—recently Song of the Day at NPR, Spinner.com, and KEXP. It’s a songwriter’s urgent expression via vocalist Matt Bishop, expanded with huge singalong choruses, unraveled by a virtuoso band’s sinuous arrangements. It’s modern vintage, a folk-pop jam session at a vanished cabaret on the Seine, an indie rocker’s fantasy of his grandparents’ first kiss.

By developing this sound—a process captured on To Travels & Trunks—Hey Marseilles discovered that the band isn’t any one of these things but all of them. And none of them, too: When Hey Marseilles headlined a holiday party at Neumo’s in Seattle, nobody expected MC Thomas Grey of local party-hop outfit Champagne Champagne to spit a few bars over a Christmas-song medley, but there he was, and somehow it made sense. Just like the inclusion of their cover of Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You in the End” in the Starbucks-compiled Sweetheart 2010. Moments like that—and more, during Hey Marseilles’ headlining slots at local clubs and winning appearances at major Northwest festivals like Bumbershoot, Capitol Hill Block Party, Doe Bay Fest—keep fans guessing while rendering them true believers.

Because really, this is just a bunch of guys making the music they wanna hear. Because really, with a palette this colorful, anything—and anywhere—is possible.

NEW DVD/BLU-RAY: MTV’S NEWEST REALITY SERIES JERSEY SHORE

MTV has focused its lens on various subcultures and rites of passage, uncovering a host of memorable characters in the process. With its newest series, Jersey Shore, MTV peels back yet a different curtain to follow eight young adults as they move into a summer share to indulge in everything Seaside Heights, New Jersey, one of the most popular summer hot spots, has to offer. Jersey Shore uncovers sometimes surprising, often hilarious and usually over-the-top personalities as they juggle work, love, nightlife, friendship and the drama that ensues. In the end, viewers see that there is more to these tan and buff individuals than hair gel.

THE BOOKS’ ‘THE WAY OUT’ AND OTHER NEW CD RECOMMENDATIONS AT THE RX

The Books’ first album in five years marks the most sophisticated collage yet from the audio-ransacking duo of Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong. Culling from 4,000 tapes collected on their last tour, The Way Out samples hypnotherapy gurus, answering machine messages, Talkboy cassettes of playfully violent children and other unlikely sources. It’s a meticulous yet absurd work to get lost in, like a labyrinth of shattered mirrors painstakingly reassembled.

The recurring motif of throwing off the ego is a fitting one for the Books, who aim to plunge the listener into a near hypnotic state where the detritus of recorded information — found and original recordings — can wash over the listener in one primal wave. The ear may rest on specific pieces, like seashells on the Pacific’s floor, but it’s all part of a vast ocean of sound. It’s folk music for the Digital Age — instead of the needle popping on a dusty field recording, you hear the catch of electronics, an anonymous voice calling out from the slipstream of time.
