ABOUT BELINDA BOWLER AND ‘TRUMPET VINE’

BINDYTYPEFINALCROPBelinda Bowler began her singing career in elementary school. When she was in the fifth grade, her plan to play guitar and sing for her class lured the principal out of his office and into the classroom to watch the performance. She didn’t understand the look on his face until later, when her sister explained to her the real meaning of House of the Rising Sun. She has been singing ever since, in clubs, concerts, overseas and as a teacher in her own elementary classroom.

Now, for the first time in 20 years she has a recorded a new CD. It is a mix of songs she loves to sing, written by favorite songwriters that speak to life’s journey of love, loss, wonder, and healing. With the help of her producer and engineer Rich Brotherton and other talented friends this CD, called Trumpet Vine, is ready to be shared.

HELP US #SAVETHEBOISEHIVE BY 10/10!

Untitled-2Boise Hive is in danger of losing its building, and we’re looking to you to help The Record Exchange help #SavetheBoiseHive.

The non-profit musicians resource center has until Oct. 10 to raise $75,000 to match an offer on the building it’s currently leasing and occupying. Boise Hive has invested significant time and money into the space and hopes to avoid relocating. A GoFundMe page has been set up HERE; you also can donate in person at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St., Boise, ID 83702).

Boise Hive is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) founded to provide a safe, sober, all-ages, affordable rehearsal and recording place for local musicians and artists. This donor-funded, volunteer-run community space aims to provide a facility where artists come to practice and hone their craft. Boise Hive empowers musicians and artists to thrive, through access to rehearsal space, business tools, access to mental health services and other holistic health resources.

The building once housed Cedarstrom Custom Recording and then Custom Recording and Sound, one of Idaho’s oldest recording studios. As it fights to save its home, Boise Hive was just named “Best Local Recording Studio” by Boise Weekly.

The building owner notified Boise Hive that an offer for purchase had been made on the property located where such greats as Paul Revere and the Raiders and Curtis Stigers when he was a Commonaut recorded. 3907 Custer Drive behind Rockies Diner on Overland has been home to Boise Hive for over a year. The terms of Boise Hive’s lease state that they have first right of refusal, but the clock is ticking on the time left for Boise Hive to come up with the $75,000 for the deposit needed to secure a loan and match the offer.

“I came to the Boise Hive as a volunteer because I saw the opportunity to contribute in a positive and healthy way to an industry that had negatively fueled my history with addiction and depression,” says Juta Geurtsen, Executive Director. “Music and art have been an important part of my own recovery and the idea of a safe and sober space where artists can support each other and their work is essential. Since then I have been touched daily by the healing that happens in community. Isolation and stigma are the killers for creatives who struggle with issues of mental health and well being. We aim to break that down, one day at a time. With the community’s help we will save the Boise Hive, one day at a time.”

ABOUT YOUTH LAGOON AND ‘SAVAGE HILLS BALLROOM’

Youth Lagoon – aka Boise native Trevor Powers – is releasing his third album, Savage Hills Ballroom, on Sept. 25 via Fat Possum Records (limited-edition gold vinyl comes out on Vinyl Tuesday, Sept. 22). Often perceived as a recluse (his first LP is called The Year of Hibernation, after all), on Savage Hills Ballroom Powers has fully opened himself to the world for the first time ever. The 10-track collection is his most ambitious, unguarded work to date, recorded in Bristol, UK and co-produced/mixed/engineered by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Gravenhurst).

While touring on his last record, 2013’s Wondrous Bughouse, Powers got a call that one of his closest friends had unexpectedly passed away, forcing him to cancel the rest of the tour and head back to Idaho. He says, “That experience made me start viewing Youth Lagoon differently – it was a complete refocus for me.”

This sense of gilded rebirth floods the instrumentation on Savage Hills Ballroom – Power’s vocals are largely unadorned and his pop-conscious electronics reach new feats of precision. Meanwhile the lyrics explore darker territory. “Kerry” is the story of Powers’ revered uncle whose drug addiction led him to running from the law for most of his adult life, while “Highway Patrol Stun Gun” imagines Biblical end-times through the lens of the recent cases of police brutality.

NPR called Wondrous Bughouse “the most arresting headphones record you’ll hear all year,” but on Savage Hills Ballroom Powers has taken off the cans and made a record meant to communicate, rather than shut out. “I think I’ve had a lot of barriers in my life in general that I don’t let people past, and I’ve gotten really sick of all that,” he explains, “It’s too tiring trying to pretend you don’t have as many flaws as everyone else.”
