Once again, The Record Exchange and Treefort Music Fest are planning a series of Secret Treefort In-stores during the festival, and we’re pleased to announce our first confirmed show:

Thursday, March 21 (5 p.m.)
The Record Exchange
1105 W. Idaho St., Boise (two blocks from the Treefort main stage)

The secret in-store will take place right before the official festival kick-off with Finn Riggins next door at Neurolux.

All Record Exchange Secret Treefort In-stores are free and all ages, and a Treefort pass is not required to attend (but you really should get one because this festival is gonna rule).

The RX and Treefort will announce the artist on the morning of March 21 via social media and The Record Exchange email list, which you can sign up for HERE.

what made milwaukee famousWhat Made Milwaukee Famous will perform live at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St., Downtown Boise) at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18. As always, this Record Exchange in-store performance is free and all ages. What Made Milwaukee Famous is performing at Neurolux on Feb. 19 as part of Radio Boise Tuesdays and we have tickets for sale at the store! RSVP HERE.

It’s also Presidents Day, and given that it’s a holiday The Record Exchange is offering customers 20% off storewide* all day long! The coffee/gift shop opens at 7:30 a.m., then the record store side opens at 9 a.m. (closing at 9 p.m. in our usual fashion). (*Excludes sale and clearance items.)

The RX is holding a Treefort Music Fest Flash Sale during the in-store. From 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, we’re selling 4-day Treefort passes for only $99 — that’s $10 cheaper than you can get them anywhere else! At $99 with 250 bands on the bill, that amounts to 40 cents a band.

ABOUT WHAT MADE MILWAUKEE FAMOUS

what made milwaukee coverWhat Made Milwaukee Famous has been a stalwart of the Austin music scene since their inception in 2003. The three original members, Michael Kingcaid (vocals, guitar, keyboards), John Farmer (bass), and Jason Davis (guitars, vocals), each bring a diverse range of influences to the table, allowing them to seamlessly shift between genres at the drop of a hat.

With the release of their first two records, Trying to Never Catch Up and What Doesn’t Kill Us on Seattle’s Barsuk imprint, the band was touted for their abilities to channel strong musicianship and diverse song-writing into instantly, addictive hooks. Nearly five years later comes their third album You Can’t Fall Off the Floor, which was self-released in January.

Their “elegant pop” (Billboard) has landed them on the bill at a number of the mammoth festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Sasquatch, SXSW and Lollapalooza, highlighted by a taping on PBS’s prestigious Austin City Limits with Franz Ferdinand. They have also shared the stage with the likes of Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, The National, Snow Patrol, The Walkmen, TV on the Radio, and the Pretenders to name a few; a testament to their musical diversity and mutual respect with other artists in the industry.

ABOUT KEN STRINGFELLOW

ken-stringfellow-danzig-in-the-moonlight 200Ken Stringfellow – musician, songwriter, producer, arranger – has been part of the indie landscape since the debut of his acclaimed band The Posies in 1988. Hailing from the musical hotbed of Seattle at the time when that music scene exploded into national prominence, The Posies went on to sign with Geffen Records and released brilliant, successful albums such as 1993’s legendary Frosting on the Beater. The band is still active today, having released their seventh album Blood/Candy in 2010 … an album heaped with critical praise in the U.K. press: The Word magazine devoted two pages to a review, which called it “a finely calibrated … dazzling tapestry … just stupidly good.”

In addition to his groundbreaking work with the Posies, Ken was part of rock legends Big Star, one of the most acclaimed and legendary groups of all time, from 1993 until the death of Alex Chilton in 2010. Ken played bass, sang and helped create the band’s 2005 album In Space, their first since 1978’s timeless Third/Sister Lovers. He’s still frequently called upon to perform, speak about and celebrate the music of one of the cornerstones of indie rock.

Ken also spent ten years on the road and in studio with R.E.M., appearing on two albums (2001’s Reveal and 2004’s Around the Sun) and propelling the band on keyboards, bass, guitar and accordion during headlining slots at Glastonbury, Rock In Rio, Rock Am Ring, etc., as well as on TV shows such as Top of the Pops, Saturday Night Live, Later With Jools Holland and countless others.

The list of collaborations goes on: guitarist in punk legends Lagwagon; producer/engineer on albums for Damien Jurado, the Long Winters, China’s Hanggai and dozens more; onstage and on-album appearances with Snow Patrol (keyboards on their landmark Eyes Open album), Neil Young, Patti Smith, Mudhoney, Death Cab For Cutie … to list all his work over the years would add up to hundreds of albums and thousands of live appearances.

Then there’s his solo work. A scant four albums over the last two decades (1997’s This Sounds Like Goodbye, 2001’s Touched, 2004’s Soft Commands and 2012’s Danzig in the Moonlight), all garnering high praise in Pitchfork, Mojo, NME and other incontrovertible indie rock media. The albums mix Ken’s deeply expressed, emotional singing with delicate support: acoustic, electric, electronic, chamber — Stringfellow is adept at many styles. His shows are legendary, pushing minimalism to its core definition, often performing without using the house P.A,. Ken’s voice soars, cries, leaps from barely audible to room-filling anguish, joy, sorrow and humor. Ken’s live show has been raved about in packed audiences from Lithuania to Lima, from Taipei to Tasmania, from Johannesburg to Trinidad.

'IDAHO HO HO' BENEFIT ALBUM RELEASE IN-STORE CONCERT TUESDAY, NOV. 27!

The Record Exchange will host a special IdaHo Ho Ho with Moxie Java benefit album release in-store at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27. As always, this Record Exchange in-store performance is free and all ages.

Once again, Moxie Java and Idaho musicians have combined efforts to support the Idaho Foodbank with the third volume of IdaHo Ho Ho with Moxie Java, another holiday celebration with music from 13 Idaho artists.

The CD will be available at The Record Exchange during the in-store, which will feature artists from the album performing their holiday tunes live on the RX stage!

The limited-edition CD will be available at the Record Exchange and participating Moxie Java locations throughout the Treasure Valley for $15, with all profits going directly to help fund the efforts of the Idaho Foodbank – the largest distributor of free emergency food in the state. Since 1984, the Idaho Foodbank has provided 100 million pounds of food to a network of more than 200 hunger-relief partners.
