'IDAHO HO HO' CD RAISES MORE THAN $18,000 FOR THE IDAHO FOODBANK!

Moxie Java nearly tripled this year’s donation to The Idaho Foodbank through sales of IdaHo Ho Ho with Moxie Java. Though this is only the second year Moxie Java has produced the holiday CD, sales generated $18,261.48, enough to provide approximately 54,000 meals for those in need throughout the state.

“This is such a wonderful project, so much in the spirit of the holidays,” said Karen Vauk, President and CEO of The Idaho Foodbank. “We are very grateful to Moxie Java and everyone who once again gave so generously of their time and talent to make this a reality. We very much look forward to the 2012 holiday CD.”

Though it was only available for the holidays, over 1,900 CDs were sold at Moxie Java locations and the Record Exchange. IdaHo Ho Ho with Moxie Java charted No. 1 and 2 on the Record Exchange weekly best seller list in December and came in No. 5 on its top 50 sellers list for 2011.

“The Record Exchange was proud to carry this special holiday CD, and its sales performance here at the store was indicative of the quality of the music and the generosity of our community,” said Chad Dryden, Marketing and Promotions Director for the Record Exchange. “It was great to see so many enthused customers come in looking specifically for the CD and show their support for our local music scene and The Idaho Foodbank.”

“Producing a record with local original and traditional Christmas music for such a great cause has become one of the highlights of my year,” said Steve Fulton, owner of Audio Lab, where the CD was produced. “I have enough music earmarked for at least a couple more years already. There are so many incredible artists who want to contribute that the quality of this CD is just going to continue to be of high caliber. I look forward to the next one.”

If you still haven’t picked up the 2011 album, limited quantities are available at The Record Exchange throughout the year. The 2010 and 2011 compilations will also be available next November along with the third album, which is already in the works.

“Between the amazing Idaho artists donating their time, Audio Lab and The Record Exchange as a partner we seem to have found a trifecta of talent that we are so proud to stand behind,” said Moxie Java’s Carrie Hoff. “We couldn’t be more thankful to everyone who helped make this project a success and look forward to what we can do for The Idaho Foodbank in December.”

If local musicians are interested in participating in the 2012 IdaHo Ho Ho with Moxie Java compilation, they may contact Andy Petersen at andy[at]mitchellpalmer.com.

BOISE’S THE VERY MOST RELEASES ITS FIRST CHRISTMAS EP; AVAILABLE AT THE RECORD EXCHANGE SATURDAY, DEC. 3!

ORDER ONLINE HERE.

Boise indie pop band The Very Most have always been big on Christmas. They’ve appeared on multiple Christmas compilations and recorded two Christmas songs for their seasonally themed Winter EP in 2009. Hell, even when they’re not doing Christmas songs, they’re adding sleigh bells to most of their songs. That said, it hasn’t been until now that they’ve put out a straight-up, honest-to-goodness all-Christmas release. Snow Covered, a collection of four Christmas cover songs that don’t usually get covered, will be available at The Record Exchange for $4.99 beginning Saturday, Dec. 3.

On this CD, The Very Most cover songs by The Beach Boys, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Vashti Bunyan and Twice as Much, and The Wombles, who were a fake band behind a BBC kids show about a group of giant, lovable mice-like creatures. These songs feature guest appearances by Duglas T. Stewart of Scottish band BMX Bandits (who recorded three albums for Creation records), Darragh Nolan of Irish band Sacred Animals, Mel Whittle of Glasgow’s The Hermit Crabs, and Rachael Jensen, formerly of Portland’s Parenthetical Girls. They also feature local guest musicians Alison Ward of Hillfolk Noir and Aage Nielsen, formerly of Darkwood Consort.

Another thing you should know about this release is that half of the proceeds go to the Idaho Foodbank. The Very Most couldn’t really feel right about using the idea of Christmas to make music without, you know, doing something at least a little bit Peace-on-Earth-Goodwill-Toward-Men-ish.

‘IDAHO HO HO’ BENEFIT CD FOR IDAHO FOODBANK NOW IN STOCK AT THE RX!

Once again, Moxie Java and Idaho musicians have combined efforts to support the Idaho Foodbank with the second volume of IdaHo Ho Ho with Moxie Java, another holiday celebration with music from 13 Idaho artists. The CD is now available at The Record Exchange!

This year, featured artists such as Rosalie Sorrels, Reckless Kelly, House of Hoi Polloi and Boise Rock School provide a wonderful way to add local flavor to any holiday atmosphere. The limited-edition CD will be available at the Record Exchange and participating Moxie Java locations throughout the Treasure Valley for $15, with all profits going directly to help fund the efforts of the Idaho Foodbank.

“We are so pleased that Moxie Java and these talented Idahoans have made this CD a reality again this year. It is such a wonderful project, so much in the spirit of the holidays,” said Karen Vauk, President and CEO of the Idaho Foodbank. “We are very grateful to everyone who gave so generously of their time and talent to make this a reality. Every CD sold will feed one person for 10 days. Their efforts will mean a great deal to a lot of hungry Idaho families.”

“I loved being able to work on this CD again. It really gives us all a glimpse at the amount of talent we have here in Idaho. This is music people will enjoy for years to come,” said Steve Fulton, a contributing musician and owner of Audio Lab Recording Studios in Garden City, where many of the songs were produced.

CDs will be on sale at The Idaho Foodbank’s Empty Bowls on Nov. 25 on the Grove and at participating Moxie Java locations and The Record Exchange through Dec. 31. Every CD includes a five-dollar Moxie Java gift card, which makes it a great stocking stuffer!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am a Boise painter working in pastel and oil, and my usual subjects are panoramic landscapes and still life. I am particularly interested in depicting the play of light, whether it falls on open Idaho desert or on the various textures of objects I set up in a still life. The MUNNY project, which I have participated in for most of the years that The Record Exchange has sponsored it, gives me an opportunity to do something entirely different from my typical painting, and it’s also really fun. My work can be seen on my website, shelleymccarl.com, or by appointment by calling me at (208) 283-4158. — Shelly McCarl

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I was born at the White Memorial Hospital in 1959, Los Angeles, California. I grew up in South San Gabriel, which was weird because nobody knew where “North San Gabriel” was. I grew up watching my mother oil paint and knew that that is what I wanted to do … well, that and play with my Hot Wheels. So that is what I do. I paint and collect toys. While the majority of my life was spent in California, I also lived in various states and countries such as Arizona, Utah, England and now Idaho. I met my wife of 30 years in England and together we have raised 6 children, 5 girls and 1 boy.

I started out freelance illustrating for 12 years in L.A. Then I got a wild hair and went to work for a company called Wild West Designs doing monumental work and architectural bronze work from 94-96. I then started my own company called Tierra Bronze doing architectural bronze work, custom made ceramic tile back splashes, hotel lobby floors and single field tile. In that time, I had the opportunity to work with award winning designers and architects, such as Naomi Leff, Robert A.M. Stern and Paula Berg, from 93-03. My work can be seen across the United States from Mexico to Wyoming and as far East as New York. I also taught at the Utah Valley State College in ’99, teaching drawing, figure drawing, watercolor and understanding materials. I have had the opportunity to come full circle back to my first passion, drawing and painting.

I don’t attempt to explain my work, it can have more than one meaning. Art is so subjective, and views differ from one person to the next, so I leave it to the viewer to go away with whatever the images mean to them. I very rarely have an agenda or wish to pull the viewer to any opinion or belief of mine. I just hope that there is a reaction of some kind, either you hate the work, are inspired by it, or just laugh, so enjoy. — Tony Rios

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Erin Ruiz is a freelance artist subsisting on a strict regiment of painting, a lack of sleep, and Ramen noodles. In her younger days, she chose to leave the comfort of hermitage to attend Savannah College of Art and Design, where, 2004, she graduated with an Undergraduate Award and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration. After living in Georgia for three years, she moved back home to Boise, Idaho to pursue a career in the arts. A drawer since birth, painter by trade, she now works in a variety of media of anything from oil paint to ballpoint pen. Her current work masquerades as inviting and soft – oftentimes melancholic, pop surrealistic images rife with subtext and layered with playful undertones of symbolism.
