Already largely met with acclaim, R.E.M.’s album Collapse Into Now was recorded in Berlin, Portland, New Orleans, and Nashville, and its diversity is said to reflect the various locations. Band members Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills are joined by an eclectic group of guests, including Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Peaches, and Patti Smith (who previously collaborated with the band on standout single “E-Bow the Letter”). Each of the album’s 12 songs are being made into short films, and the first three, directed by Tom Gilroy, Dominic DeJoseph, and Sam Taylor-Wood, are available now. -MC

LUCINDA WILLIAMS “BLESSED” AND OTHER NEW RX CD RECOMMENDATIONS!
Given that she made her name with songs of heartbreak and betrayal, what motivates Lucinda Williams now she’s found love? Her 10th album casts wide for inspiration. “Buttercup” bids a lover farewell with her usual disdain, but “Blessed” counts the strands of happiness. “Soldier’s Song” empathises with an army far from home, while “Seeing Black” delves into the mind of a suicidal friend (the late songwriter Vic Chesnutt). Elvis Costello is among those contributing to the guitar-heavy pieces, but it’s the gentle “Copenhagen” and the mournful “Kiss Like Your Kiss” that are the standouts, their reflective qualities intensified by Williams’s racked vocals. –TG
