RX RECOMMENDS: SANTANA’S ‘GUITAR HEAVEN: GREATEST GUITAR CLASSICS’

BUY CD/DVD HERE

The longest-running, most successful partnership in the history of rock takes flight anew, as legendary Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductees Carlos Santana and Clive Davis collaborate on the brand new concept album, Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time. The album was co-produced by Carlos Santana and Clive Davis with tracks produced by Matt Serletic and Howard Benson.

Working from their collective encyclopedic knowledge of rock, Carlos Santana and Clive Davis devised a list of guitar-centric titles and then invited a who’s who of guest vocalists to perform on every track. Singers include Chris Cornell (on Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love), Pat Monahan (on Van Halen’s Dance the Night Away), Chester Bennington and Ray Manzarek (on The Doors’ Riders on the Storm ), Rob Thomas (on Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love), Scott Weiland (on the Rolling Stones’ Cant You Hear Me Knocking), Chris Daughtry (on Def Leppard’s Photograph), Gavin Rossdale (on T. Rex’s Bang A Gong ), Nas (on AC/DC’s Back In Black ), Joe Cocker (on Jimi Hendrix’s Little Wing) and more.

A very special dedication to George Harrison comes together on Guitar Heaven with While My Guitar Gently Weeps, featuring singer india.arie and master cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Listening to the song, Olivia Harrison told Carlos, “It made me jump for joy and cry at the same time.”

The Deluxe Edition includes a DVD featuring the making of Guitar Heaven and an interview with Carlos Santana and Clive Davis.

THE VINYL WORD: GET INTRODUCED TO (OR REVISIT) THE LATE ELLIOTT SMITH

BUY THE VINYL HERE

An Introduction To… is Kill Rock Stars’ pitch at a Elliott Smith career primer, and although one could get caught up in questioning the need for any such anthology in the download era, it is pretty fantastically difficult to fault as a collection of songs, and KRS’ intentions and target audience are clear. Ranging from Smith’s relatively spotty 1994 solo debut Roman Candle (from which only one selection appears) through to “Miss Misery,” the pivot point of his career, knowingly offered here in an early, pre-Oscar nominated incarnation, through to a few selections from New Moon, 2007’s posthumous collection of vaulted odds and ends, it’s more a testimony to the ferociously high quality of work that comprised Smith’s catalogue than any triumph of curation.

As the song selection goes, though, An Introduction To… is as tasteful and as thorough as one could reasonably demand. As you might expect, given the title and the label, it is distinctly light on material from Smith’s Dreamworks years, during which he was arguably at the peak of his powers, but it makes up for that thinness by offering up a judicious selection from Smith’s indie breakthrough, 1998’s Either/Or, as well as a few slightly rarer versions of fan favorites, like the single version of “Happiness” and a newly remastered version of 1997’s “Last Call”.

As is the way with these sorts of things, An Introduction To… will also invite the more familiar listener to play a game of soft scrutiny and reflection on what may or may not be a few sins of omission, but of course that’s not really the point. The point is that there are lots of people who haven’t yet had the occasion to discover Elliott Smith, and ultimately this gives them a chance to scratch away at the bittersweet reality of his work, at how conflicted he sounded, at how bitterly unresolved his career remains, and how every single song still somehow feels like both a confection and a dagger. — Pitchfork

• NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS THINKINDIE EXCLUSIVE

Courtney Marie Andrews is just turning 20. Listening to For One I Knew makes you think of someone older and more worldly. Her voice is confident and her music is dark and twisting. At times, she reminds you of Joni Mitchell’s more folky stuff from the early part of her career before she discovered jazz tunings. River Jones Music is a label based in Phoenix, Arizona. The label has a knack for cultivating young artists hanging in the downtown area of that city. Speaking of local artists, local boys Jimmy Eat World had Courtney sing backup on their recent album and tour. Lots going on around this artist. You should also check out her other albums. Yup, older than her years.

• ARTIST TO WATCH: SHADOW SHADOW SHADE (ONLY $5.99!)

L.A. buzz band Shadow Shadow Shade release their debut album Shadow Shadow Shade on Public Records. It jumps out the gate with “Is This A Tempest In The Shape Of A Bell,” which sounds like Brian Eno fronting early Pink Floyd.

I guess it’s no wonder that this seven-piece band see themselves as a big art project more than a rock group. The members include a producer, an opera singer (you can’t miss her) and various other art type folks. The vocal arrangements are quite startling in their complexity and tonal quality.

I guess the thing that really gets me about this group, is the depth of the music and the vision put into the entire project. From the cover art to individual notes, you can tell they give a shit. They conjure bands like the Mama’s And Papas, Queen, Roxy Music and the already mentioned Pink Floyd. The new album’s on sale for $5.99, which makes it easy to afford. I promise the music is not cheap and it will keep you wondering where these guys have been hiding all these years. – radiofreedavis@thinkindie
