NEW DVD/BLU-RAY: FOO FIGHTERS ‘BACK & FORTH’ AND OTHERS!

BUY THE DVD HERE

Foo Fighters: Back and Forth is a potted history of one of the biggest bands in the world, detailing their birth following the tragic death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, charting their rise through the rock ‘n’ roll ranks to become stadium headliners, and documenting their efforts to go back to basics on a new album.

Dave Grohl is the star of the show, just as he is the driving force behind the band’s success. A skinny, goofy kid who found fame as the drummer for grunge gods Nirvana, the film quickly deals with their (somewhat more interesting) story, or more specifically Cobain’s inability to deal with the global fame that was thrust upon him following the success of album Nevermind. THE VINYL WORD: OWL CITY ‘ALL THINGS BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL’

BUY THE VINYL HERE

Owl City’s new album, All Things Bright and Beautiful, is somewhat mistitled. The tracks are bright, to be sure, but more so in emo-pop, acid-bright tone than in any sense of actual joy. And the beauty here is (arguably) in the repetition of that tone; if you’re a diehard Owl City fan, then you’re going to love this disc.

The 12 tracks here are mostly three to four minutes long, a pretty standard setup on a pretty standard pop album. The one exception is “January 12, 1986”, a 38-second clip of Reagan’s speech after the Challenger disaster, played rather inexplicably in the middle of the album over a quiet track of synth and open-vowel vocals. This probably has some significance for Owl City’s Adam Young (and appears to lead into next track “Galaxies”), but some insight might be helpful. As is, the interlude feels like a distraction (albeit a welcome one). – Consequence of Sound

MORNE ‘ASYLUM’ AND OTHER NEW CD RECOMMENDATIONS!

BUY THE CD HERE

Entitled ‘Asylum‘, this Boston contingent have been known (in their somewhat-short career) to create some of the heaviest, most absorbing, and overwhelming sounds in heavy music. Sounds that mirror the vibe bands like Neurosis had back in their ‘souls at zero’ days. It didnt take long for Morne to become a notable force within the modern-day crust and hardcore-punk movement. Nonetheless, ‘Asylum‘ is Morne’s heaviest, most atmospheric and cinematic sonic offering to date. While still maintaining the bands crust, hardcore, and post-metal leanings, ‘Asylum sees the band delve more into genres such as progressive-metal and prog-rock. – Toxicbreed’s Funhouse

NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK: NEIL YOUNG AND THE INTERNATIONAL HARVESTERS ‘A TREASURE’

BUY THE CD HERE

The archive series is just as stubborn and erratic as Neil Young’s studio output, which is what keeps it interesting, and A Treasure is the most intriguing release to date. It represents a peculiar time in Young’s career and shows that, despite being in limbo he was still energized to perform, to keep pushing and reinventing himself, and to chase down whatever muse hit him in the moment.

The 12 songs here are culled from tours that took place in ‘84 and ‘85. The tours were not in support of any album in particular—though there’s stuff here that would end up on 1985’s Old Ways—and he wasn’t backed by his label. By ‘84, Young had recently released the infamous vocoder-vamp Trans and, then, he stuck Everybody’s Rockin’ right in Geffen’s eye. The album’s ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll revivalism was a response to Geffen’s request for a more rock-oriented album from Young, and the label hated the record so much they sued Young over it.Popmatters
