On Tuesday, May 11, The Record Exchange is starting a Wonka-themed promotion in conjunction with the highly-anticipated release of The National‘s excellent new album High Violet.

One lucky customer who purchases the indie-store exclusive version of High Violet on CD (foil stamping and folded poster) or vinyl (colored vinyl, foil stamping and download card) will find a Golden Ticket inside redeemable for a $50 Record Exchange gift card.

Additionally, we will be inserting Golden Tickets into random used CDs and DVDs that can be redeemed for $5 and $20 Record Exchange gift cards. There’s no telling where you’ll find a Golden Ticket, but we’re distributing them across all music and DVD genres so happy hunting!

Now, back to the new National album, which is currently being streamed in its entirety by NPR. High Violet is a nervy, melodic, explosive and beautiful set of songs that find the band at the height of their collaborative powers. The music is wide-ranging in its moods, by turns intimate and rough, expansive and spare, full of stark angles and atmosphere.

Matt Berninger’s singing—wild, half-broken, sly—evokes a feeling of being haunted, by love, by paranoia, by something just out of reach. High Violet may be The National’s most thematically twisted record to date, but it somehow also manages to be their most infectious and immediate.
